Abstract

Reading is an activity to get information from the written text. However, the students still have didifficulty when they read. So,  to solve the studentsdstudents problems, the researchers used Phrase - Cued text (PCT) strategy in teaching reading. The purpose of this research was to know the significant effect of teaching reading by using PCT at the eight grade students of SMPN 2 Harau in 2016/217 academic year. This research was an experimental research. The population of this research was the eight grade students of SMP N 2 Harau in 2016/2017 academic year. There were seven classes of eight grade. The sample of this research chosen by using cluster sampling. The experimental class was VIII.6 had been taught by using PCT and the control class was VIII. 7 had  been taught by using conventional strategy.  The instrument of this research was reading test in multiple choice form.  It was valid because the students have learnt the material and had been stated in syllabus and based on curriculum. Then,  the instrument was reliable because the coefficient of reliability of split half was 0.78. The researchers analyzed the data by using t-test suggested by Gay et Al. The result of the data analysis was t-calculated (3.97) > t-table (2.042) where the level of significant was 0.05 with degree freedom was 38. H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted.  So,  it can be concluded that there was significant effect of teaching reading by using PCT strategy at the eight grade students of SMP N 2 Harau.So, it is suggested for English teacher to use this PCT strategy in reading lesson.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know whether Paragraph Shrinking Strategy gave or did not give significant effect on students’ reading ability. This research was an expemerintal research which is posttest-only control group design. The population of the research was Eight Graders of SMP N 2 Kec. Luak Payakumbuh. The sample was choosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The experimental class was treated by using Paragraph Shrinking Strategy while the control class was treated by using conventional strategy. The instrument of this research was reading test in multiplechoice form. This instrument was valid because it had content validity which had been taught before and it is sbased on the syllabus. Then, this instrument was reliable because the writer had done try out and split half reliability. Next, to analyze the data, the writer used the t-test formula that suggested by Gay to answer the hypothesis. It found that t-test (6.13) and t-table (2.021). It means that t-test was bigger than t-table. On the other word, Alternative Hypothesis (H1) was accepted and Null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. So, it can be concluded that Paragragraph Shrinking Strategy gave significant effect to teaching and learning process and can increase students’ reading ability.

Abstract

Gaya bahasa merupakan variasi dari bahasa yang di gunakan penutur berdasarkan situasi. Ada lima tipe gaya bahasa yaitu frozen, formal, consultative, casual dan intimate. Di dalam dunia pembelajaran, khususnya di perguruan tinggi, gaya bahasa yang di gunakan oleh seorang dosen merupakan salah satu faktor penentu keberhasilan mahasiswa. Namun faktor penentu keberhasilan seorang mahasiswa dalam belajar tidak hanya dapat dilihat dari gaya bahasa seorang dosen tetapi juga dari persepsi para mahasiswa. Karena hal ini lah penulis tertarik untuk menganalisa persepsi para mahasiswa terhadap gaya bahasa yang di gunakan oleh seorang dosen di dalam kelas di STKIP Abdi Pendidikan Payakumbuh. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian descriptif dengan menggunakan metode qualitatif yang mana populasi nya adalah mahasiswa tahun keempat jurusan pendidikan bahasa Inggris STKIP Abdi Pendidikan Payakumbuh tahun ajaran 2015/2016. Partisipan dipilih dengan menggunakan purposive sampling, sedangkan instrument dalam penelitian ini adalah questionnaire. Hasil penelitian ini secara umum adalah mahasiswa mempunyai persepsi yang cukup bagus (832,4) terhadap gaya bahasa yang di gunakan dosen di dalam kelas dengan skor tertinggi di gaya konsultatif yaitu 1274 dan skor terendah di gaya intim yaitu 369.

Abstract

Writing means the ability of the writers in making, expressing, delivering and sharing the ideas in written form. Due to its difficulties of the skill, the teacher should be creative in applying the effective technique, one of them is praise question polish technique.This research was experimental research. The population was the second grade students of SMP N 1 Kec, Luak. There were seven classes of the second grade students which consisted of 237 students. There were two classes chosen. VIII,2 as the experimental and VIII as control class.Cluster random sampling technique to choose these classes. The experimental class was taught using the Praise-Question-Polish (PQP) technique and control was taught using the usual strategy. The instrument was valid because it has content validity. Researcher used inter -rater to see the reliability of the instrument. To analyze the data, researcher used the t-test formula from Gay and Airasian. The researcher compared the t-calculate and t-table by using a significant level of 0.05 with the degree of freedom/df (). After the researcher got data, it was found that t-count was -0.6524 and t-table was 2.000. from the calculated null hypothesis was accepted. The t-test was smaller than t-table. It meant that the research hypothesis was rejected. In other word, there was not significant effect of using Praise-Question-Polish technique in teaching writing.keywords: writing, teaching writing, Praise-Question-Polish (PQP) Technique
