Abstract

This study aims to describe the effect of using the Inside Outside Circle Model (Small Circle-Large Circle) on Students' Poetry Writing Skills. This type of research is quantitative research with experimental methods. The population in this study amounted to 257 students and a sample of 55 students which was divided into two classes, the experimental class and the control class. The sampling method is using purposive sampling. The instrument in this study used a performance test with aspects of theme, diction, imagery and figurative language assessment. Data analysis shows that the Inside Outside Circle (small circle-big circle) model has an effect on learning to write poetry in Indonesian language subjects in the experimental class. This is evidenced by an increase in student scores, which at the time of the pre-test the mean (X ) was 72.56. After applying the Inside Outside Circle learning model (small circle-big circle) in the learning process at the post-test time, the average value (X ) was 87.4. This can be seen  from the results of the comparison of tcount with ttable (4.73 > 2.021), because tcount is greater than ttable then Ha (alternative hypothesis) is accepted. So, it can be concluded that the learning outcomes of the experimental class students who were taught by the Inside Outside Circle learning model (small circle-big circle) were better than the learning outcomes of the control class students who were taught using conventional methods.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out whether teaching writing by using the RADAR (Replace, Add, Delete and Reorder) strategy is effective for students or not. The research population was class VIII students at SMPN 7 Payakumbuh consisting of five classes with the total is 105 students. There are two classes as samples, VIII-2 as the experimental class and class VIII-4 as the control class. The sample uses cluster sampling in selecting samples. The research instrument was a writing test. This instrument applies because the material is based on the curriculum or syllabus. Then, this instrument will be reliable because it will use inter-rater reliability. To analyze the post-test scores of both the experimental class and the control class, the researcher will use the T-test formula. After analyzing the data, it was found that the average value of the experimental class was higher than the average the mean score of the control class (60.13 > 53.7). t-count result is higher than t table (3.12> 2.042). This means that there is a significant influence from teaching writing using the RADAR strategy to the eighth graders of SMPN 7 Payakumbuh in the 2016/2017 Academic Year. It is recommended for English teachers to apply the RADAR Strategy in teaching writing.

The researcher compared the t-calculate and t-table by using a significant level of 0.05 with the degree of freedom/df (). After the researcher got data, it was found that t-count was -0.6524 and t-table was 2.000. from the calculated null hypothesis was accepted. The t-test was smaller than t-table.
