Abstract

Students frequently encounter difficulties in understanding Voltaic Cells because they struggle to connect macroscopic, submicroscopic, and symbolic representations. In addition, learning media that integrate multiple representations, virtual laboratory simulations, and teacher-supporting features within a single platform remain limited. Therefore, his study aimed to develop an Android-based educational application to improve students’ multirepresentational abilities in chemistry learning. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, which consists of the Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation stages. The effectiveness of the developed application was evaluated during the implementation stage using a one-group pretest–posttest design involving 34 class XII students from a senior high school in Pasuruan Regency. The developed application integrates macroscopic, submicroscopic, and symbolic chemical representations through learning materials, animations, virtual laboratory simulations, quizzes, and teacher monitoring features. The validation results showed that the material, media, and instrument aspects obtained scores of 97.62%, 97.52%, and 98.21%, respectively, all categorized as highly valid. Teacher and student responses indicated a very high level of practicality, with scores of 96.52% and 95.82%. The reliability test yielded a Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.702, indicating good reliability. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test revealed a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (Z = -5.138; p < 0.001). The N-Gain analysis showed a moderate improvement with an average score of 0.6037, with gains in macroscopic (57.62%), submicroscopic (60%), and symbolic (60.54%) aspects. Therefore, the developed Android-based application is considered valid, practical, and effective in enhancing students’ multirepresentational understanding of Voltaic Cells. These findings imply that integrating multiple representations, virtual laboratory simulations, and teacher-monitoring features into a single Android-based platform can support students’ conceptual understanding of abstract chemistry concepts and provide teachers with an alternative learning resource for facilitating and monitoring the learning process.
