Abstract

This study explores the application of Vision Language Models (VLMs) in evaluating student work, focusing on their potential to enhance efficiency and objectivity in assessment processes. VLMs, integrating natural language processing and computer vision, offer a novel approach to analyzing student responses, particularly in assignments involving visual elements. This paper outlines the functionality of VLMs, discusses their advantages and limitations, and provides practical guidance on their implementation. It also includes examples of prompt engineering and showcases initial results from a pilot study conducted at SMP N 32 Padang, demonstrating the potential of VLMs in a real-world educational setting. This method allows teacher to asses written text by the students on assignments that are also presented in written or image format. The use of VLM is expected to further develop efficiency and precision in student assessment.

Abstract

Education plays a vital role in cultivating qualified future generations, with active student participation serving as an indicator of effective learning processes. Preliminary observations at SMP Negeri 32 Padang revealed low engagement levels in science classes, prompting the need for interventions to boost students' involvement. The primary objective of this classroom action research was to enhance student engagement in science learning activities through implementing the Discovery Learning model and Teaching at the Right Level approach in a Grade 8 classroom at SMP Negeri 32 Padang. The study was conducted over three cycles, each consisting of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting phases. Data on student engagement in science learning activities was collected through observations using a rubric. The initial data in Cycle I revealed low engagement at 36.72%. After implementing interventions integrating Discovery Learning activities and personalized scaffolding based on students' ability levels in Cycles II and III, student engagement progressively increased to 45.76% and 62.28% respectively. Surveys and interviews indicated students found the learner-centered, inquiry-based activities more enjoyable and effective for understanding compared to traditional instruction. The findings demonstrate the potential of combining Discovery Learning and Teaching at the Right Level methods to significantly improve learning participation by stimulating intrinsic motivation through autonomous exploration while providing individualized support. The research offers practical strategies for enhancing science education engagement and contributes to the Kurikulum Merdeka goals of fostering participatory, flexible learning environments tailored to students' unique needs

Abstract

Background: Science process skills (SPS) are foundational for scientific inquiry, yet their conceptualization, assessment, and instruction remain fragmented. Objective: This systematic review synthesizes empirical re- search on SPS across three dimensions: conceptual frameworks, assessment instruments, and instructional strategies. Methods: A PRISMA-guided search of Scopus, ERIC, Web of Science, and Google Scholar yielded 52 studies published between 2010 and 2026. Thematic synthesis and quality appraisal using a modified MMAT checklist were employed. Results: Frameworks consistently distinguish basic from integrated SPS, but opera- tional definitions vary. Assessment has shifted from multiple-choice tests toward Rasch-validated performance rubrics, though classroom adoption lags. Guided inquiry and POGIL are the most empirically supported strategies, yet effect sizes are moderated by teacher expertise, resources, and cultural context. Conclusion: Coherent, evidence-based frameworks integrating cognitive and sociocultural perspectives are needed. Future research requires longitudinal designs, cross-cultural instrument validation, and replication studies with adequate statistical power.

Abstract

Background: Accountability structures governing personnel attendance in Indonesian higher education demand audit-compliant records. Paper-based registers in mid-tier private universities suffer from proxy signing, retroactive logs, physical record loss, and manual entry overhead. Objective: This study presents the design, longitudinal evaluation, and operational stress-testing of UNES Hebat, a zero-hardware cloud-native GPS attendance platform deployed at Universitas Ekasakti in Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Methods: The system features Progressive Web Application clients, edge content delivery, managed cloud databases, and a three-layer verification engine (Haversine GPS geofencing, real-time photographic auditing, and server-authoritative temporal validation via database stored procedures). Performance was tracked across 181 operational days with 288 registered staff, followed by a five-day stress event with 849 student participants. Results: The platform processed 29,251 attendance records with a 99.92% present-status rate and zero downtime across 4,344 server-hours. During the five-day orientation event, the platform absorbed a nineteen-fold concurrent-user surge without infrastructure modifications or performance loss. Conclusion: Server-authoritative validation paired with managed cloud architecture provides a resilient, cost-effective model for university digital governance.
