The objective of this study was to find out whether or not there was any significant improvement on students’ writing skill between students who used paragraph frame strategy and those who used sentence combining strategy of the seventh grade students at SMPN 33 of Palembang. The research method was quasi-experimental method. The design of this study was non-equivalent control group design. The technique for collecting the data was the test. The population of this study was all Seventh Grade Students of SMPN 33 of Palembang, and the sample of this study was VII.1 and VII.2. The experimental group had 33 students; meanwhile, control group had 35 students. The data were collected by giving pretest, treatment and post-test for both groups. The data were analyzed by using independent and paired sample t-test. The result of the data analysis showed that the mean score of post-test of experimental group was 81.36 and post-test of control group was 63.14. Furthermore, it shows that the value of sig, (2-tailed) was 0.00 and it was lower than 0.05 as the significant level. The value of t-obtained was 4.809 which was higher than t-table critical value of 1.996 and the degree of freedom was 66. Based on the result of data analysis, It can be concluded that there was any significant improvement on students’ writing skill between students who used paragraph frame strategy and those who used sentence combining strategy. Keywords: paragraph frame strategy, sentence combining strategy, writing skill.

Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out whether or not there was any significant difference on reading comprehension achievement between the students who were taught by using Project Based Learning and those who were not and to find out whether or not there was any significant difference on writing skill between the students who were taught by using Project Based Learning and those who were not. This study used quasi experimental study with the nonequivalent research design. The sample was the third semester students of English Study Program at Tridinanti University selected by using purposive sampling technique. Reading comprehension test and essay writing test were used as the instruments. In order to analyze the data, the researchers used paired and independent sample t-test. Having analyzed the data, the findings revealed that both experimental group and control group perform better on the posttest in writing essays. The two groups made progress, the student were mostly in developing category in pretest but they were then in proficient and basic category in posttest. Even though both groups made progress, it can also be stated that students in experimental group performed more progress on posttest in making more structured essay writing than the control group did. Regarding the findings of reading comprehension achievement, it indicates that the students had no significant difference between the students who were taught by using project-based learning and those were not. Although the experimental group had significant improvement in reading comprehension achievement by using Project based learning.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out whether or not there was any correlation between students reading comprehension and students listening comprehension. The population was the tenth-grade students with the total 630 students from 14 classes at SMA N 10 Palembang. To the sample of this research, intake sampling technique was implemented. There were 90 students as a sample from class X.7 and X.8. The data were selected from students reading comprehension and students listening comprehension. In analysing the data, correlation analysis, regression analysis and normality test was used. Based on the statistical, it was found that the correlation coefficient or the R-value (0.000) with significant coefficient (p-value) was 0.422, which was higher than 0.05. It means that significant value (2-tailed) was higher than alpha value (0.422> 0.05). It could be concluded that there was a significant correlation between students' reading comprehension and listening skill. Since the Pearson correlation coefficient was 0.000, it indicated that there was correlation between students' reading.  Also, for the contribution of listening comprehension to reading comprehension it was only 17.8%. It means that listening comprehension has no influence to reading comprehension. In conclusion, the findings indicate that students who have high listening comprehension does mean that they will also have good reading comprehension. Also, reading comprehension can be used to help listening skills because listening is the ability to capture sounds, complete, speak, syntax, jargon, and obtain data.

Abstract

This study investigated how lecturers designed their teaching materials and what constraints they encountered in using the materials. It was a qualitative research using a phenomenological design  which involved lecturers of English as general subject at faculties of economic, engineering and teacher training and education as the respondents. To obtain data, the respondents were scheduled  to deliver their responses in semi-structured interview. The findings revealed that the respondents selected their material on the basis of RPS. In order to fulfill students’ need related to the major they have chosen, they used some eBooks of English for Business, Business Communication, Cambridge Online, Bursa Efek Jakarta and English for Engineering to select the material. The respondents realized the importance of integrating four language skills, since the limitation of time some of them focused their teaching on reading skill and vocabulary while some others put much pressure on practicing speaking and writing which they thought more important. Another finding  also revealed that some constraints the respondents encountered during the teaching and learning process were: 1) some students were not very enthusiastic in learning, 2) some students were not confident, they  did not join the class seriously and tended to show low comprehension in learning English, 3) some respondents stated that time allocation in teaching EGP was not enough and  4) they also had not enough time to check or give comment on students’work
