Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out whether or not the students’ reading habit and students’ reading strategy correlated significantly with their reading comprehension and to find out whether or not students’ reading strategy correlated significantly with their reading comprehension. The method of this research used quantitative method in correlation research. The sample of the study was seventeen of third semester students of English Education Study Program of Tridinanti University Palembang. The data were collected by administering reading test and gives two questionnaires; reading habit questionnaires and reading strategy questionnaires. The data were analyzed by using descriptive and correlational analyses. There were two results found: First, the students’ reading  habit had no significant correlation with their reading comprehension. It was found that correlation coeficient  level between reading habit and reading comprehension was (-0.099) with the sig. value was higher than 0.05 (0.705). Second, the correlation coeficient level between students’ reading strategy and reading comprehension was not correlated (-0.451) with the  sig. value higher than 0.05 (0.069).     Keywords:  reading habit, reading strategy, reading comprehension.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The problems of the research were: 1. What types of grammatical errors were found in the SL into TL Translation made by fifth semester students of English department of Tridinanti University of Palembang? 2.What were the frequency and the percentage of each types of grammatical error in translated texts made by the students? The aims of the study were to describe the errors that were found in the SL into TL Translation writing made by the students of Tridinanti University Palembang, to describe the frequency and the percentage of each type of grammatical errors in translated texts made by the students. In this research the writer used qualitative approach with the documentation technique used to collect the data, and analyze the data used of content analysis. The result of the research based on the surface category taxonomy, the student‘s errors could be classified into: 1) omission, (2) addition, (3) misformation, and (4) misordering errors. 2) Reveal with the frequency and the percentage of each types of grammatical error in translated texts made by the students, the writer found that 0.95 % errors in omission, 0.8 % errors in additions, 0.8 % errors in missformation), 0.75 errors in misordering.Keywords: Errors, translation, SL into TL.

Abstract

This paper presents and examines the students’ present situation analysis of mechanical engineering. In order to investigate present situation analysis, the data is collected through questionnaires of present situation analysis are distributed to the students of mechanical engineering study program with the total 111 students. A qualitiative with descriptive research method is adopted for this evaluation study. The results generated by PSA questionnaire is shown that the students learning input  including listening input, speaking input, reading input, and writing input. Based on the findings, most of the students’ proficiency levels at beginner category. Regarding listening input, the students’ preferences input for listening used authentic materials and the topic preferences of students were about daily routines.  Speaking input, most of the students’ input for speaking  preferred monologue and dialogue with new vocabularies list and phonetic transcription  with the desired topic for speaking input that was mechanical engineering field.  Reading input, students’ preferences for reading input were authentic materials closely related to daily life with the topics desired for reading input was daily routines. Writing input, the students preferred to the explaination of the structures of the text related to the topics with the length of words was 100 – 150 words.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out whether there was significantly correlation and contribution or not between reading habit and linguistic intelligence.Seventy two students as sample by using intact sampling technique. The  method of this study was correlational research. In analyzing the data, correlation analysis and regression analysis were used.It was found that the correlation coefficient or the r-value (0.361) was higher than r-table (0.228). Then, the level of probability (p) significance (sig.2-tailed) was 0.000. It means that p-value (0.002) was lower than 0.05.Inanalyzing the data of regression analysis, it was found that the students’ reading habit contributed students’ linguistic intelligence significantly with tvalue (3.234) was higher than ttable (1.667) with sig.value (0.002) was lower than probability (0.05). It means that students’ reading habit support significant effect in the level of 13% toward linguistic intelligence.Itcanconcluded that there was a significant correlation and contribution between reading habit and linguistic intelligences.

Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out whether or not there was any significant difference on reading comprehension achievement between the students who were taught by using Project Based Learning and those who were not and to find out whether or not there was any significant difference on writing skill between the students who were taught by using Project Based Learning and those who were not. This study used quasi experimental study with the nonequivalent research design. The sample was the third semester students of English Study Program at Tridinanti University selected by using purposive sampling technique. Reading comprehension test and essay writing test were used as the instruments. In order to analyze the data, the researchers used paired and independent sample t-test. Having analyzed the data, the findings revealed that both experimental group and control group perform better on the posttest in writing essays. The two groups made progress, the student were mostly in developing category in pretest but they were then in proficient and basic category in posttest. Even though both groups made progress, it can also be stated that students in experimental group performed more progress on posttest in making more structured essay writing than the control group did. Regarding the findings of reading comprehension achievement, it indicates that the students had no significant difference between the students who were taught by using project-based learning and those were not. Although the experimental group had significant improvement in reading comprehension achievement by using Project based learning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the differences and similarities in the imperative politeness of American and Indonesian in the news media. Descriptive qualitative research was used. Data were collected from the news column in The Jakarta Post and Kompas. The research used qualitative approach. The results showed that American and Indonesian imperative sentences have differences that are the position of American politeness marker can be at the beginning or at the end of the sentence, while in Indonesian politeness marker can only be placed at the beginning of the sentence. Moreover, American and Indonesian imperative sentences of politeness in news media have similarities that are the use of the basic form of the verb at the beginning of a sentence; a statement about the desire for one's public self-image in the form of involvement and endorsement to get respect from others; and polite statement based on the face compensation amount.

Abstract

Abstract : The problem of this study was to find out whether it is effective or not to use students’ centered learning strategy in enhancing students’ speaking ability. It aims to find out the effectiveness of students’ centered learning method to enhance students’ speaking ability. The population was all of the students of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Tridinanti University Palembang in  academic year 2013-2014. They were 32 students and taken by using random sampling. The method was pre-experimental method by using pre-test and the post-test design. The data were obtained by means of  the test, the results were analyzed through the match t-test calculation. Based on the  finding, the writer found that the average score in the pre-test was 62.97, and the average score in the post-test was 75.62. From the matched t-test calculation, the writer got that t-obtained was 4.85. It showed that t-obtained was higher than critical value (1.684) . It can be concluded that it was effective to use students’ centered learning strategy in enhancing student’ speaking ability at Faculty of Teacher Training  and Education of Tridinanti University.Keywords : speaking ability, students’ centered learning.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to find out the reason of English teachers switch their language during teaching process and the types of code switching were used by them in teaching learning process in PAUD Cipta Kreatif Bangsa Palembang. The population of this study was English teacher at PAUD Cipta Kreatif Bangsa 2015, the number of teacher are eight. The Sample was used in this study just one teacher. The Method of this study is descriptive qualitative method. Technique for collecting the data by observation and interview. Based on this study, the writer found that there are three types of code switching that is used by teacher in the classroom, they are : 1) extra – sentential code switching, 2) inter – sentential code switching, and 3) intra – sentential code switching. The writer also found some reasons why teacher switch their language, they are : (1) To clarify expalanation, (2) To show their formality to the students when they speak in the, (3) To talk about a particular topic a teacher feels free and more comfortable to express their emotions, excitements in the classroom, and (4) For affective functions, teacher switches code to express his/her emotional feeling, and the students do not have to understand the meaning but can receive the affective meaning of the speaker whether he/she is happy, excited, sad, angry, mocking the hearer, and so on. Key words: code switching, descriptive qualitative.
