Abstract

This study discusses prohibitive utterances as a form of speech act that serves to prevent or stop actions that are undesirable to the speaker. The main objective of this study is to explain the measurement of the duration and intensity of prohibitive utterances in Indonesian spoken by male and female speakers, as well as to identify the greatest, smallest, and average stress based on sentence type. This study uses experimental phonetic methods with an acoustic approach to analyze language sounds, focusing on acoustic values and sound waves. Data in the form of recordings of prohibitive utterances in WAV format were collected through recording techniques from male and female respondents. The analysis was carried out using PRAAT software, focusing on the duration and intensity of the sound. The data were classified into three categories of utterances: short, medium, and long. The results showed that prohibitive utterances with short, medium, and long sentences tended to be spoken more quickly by male speakers. The greatest stress in long utterances was found on the word “don't,” both by male and female speakers, with higher intensity variations in males. In medium-length sentences, intensity was relatively balanced between genders. Short sentences tended to be spoken with stronger spontaneous emphasis, both by males and females. This study shows that physical variations in the sound of prohibitive utterances are influenced by sentence structure, emotion, and speaker gender, which has implications for effective communication strategies in prohibitive contexts.

Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic required governments worldwide to deliver timely, clear, and persuasive crisis communication to maintain public trust and compliance. Objective: This study aims to examine the lexical patterns, narrative structures, and pragmatic strategies in Indonesian government COVID-19 briefings, focusing on how language was used to manage public understanding and behavior. Method: Using a qualitative corpus-based discourse analysis integrating corpus linguistics, discourse analysis, and speech act/politeness theory, the research analyzed transcripts, press releases, and official video subtitles from March 2020 to December 2021. Results: Findings show that the government consistently employed anchor phrases such as protokol kesehatan alongside phase-specific terminology to balance continuity and adaptability. Narrative structures followed a stable Opening–Problem–Policy–Closing format, reinforced by culturally resonant frames like gotong royong and otoritas ilmiah. Pragmatically, directives dominated but were frequently mitigated through positive politeness strategies to preserve solidarity and trust. These results suggest that Indonesia’s crisis communication effectively integrated informational clarity with cultural sensitivity. Implication: The findings have implications for designing culturally adaptive, trust-oriented governmental communication strategies in future public health emergencies. Novelty: This study shows how corpus-driven discourse patterns and culturally embedded pragmatic strategies work together to sustain clarity, trust, and compliance in governmental crisis communication.

Abstract

Background: Urban linguistic landscapes remain difficult to examine at metropolitan scale because conventional fieldwork offers interpretive depth but limited spatial coverage, while automated image analysis often overlooks linguistic and social context. Objective: This study aims to integrate street-view imagery, machine-assisted text recognition, geospatial analysis, and multimodal interpretation to map publicly visible languages across differentiated urban environments in Jakarta. Method: This study applies a spatially explicit multimethod design to ninety validated signs extracted from nine eligible public images, combining sign detection, OCR, language identification, human validation, corridor-based mapping, and social-semiotic coding. Results: Findings indicate that machine-readable visibility is uneven, with standardized regulatory and commercial signs more reliably detected than temporary, occluded, stylized, or mixed-script signs. Spatial patterns show Indonesian concentrated in regulatory corridors, English more visible in corporate and retail settings, and Chinese localized within Glodok’s commercial landscape. Implication: Institutional analysis further demonstrates that language hierarchy is produced through sign ownership, communicative function, placement, typography, colour, materiality, and logo positioning rather than frequency alone. Novelty: This study contributes a reproducible framework that connects computational accuracy, exposure-aware spatial comparison, and socially grounded interpretation while preventing linguistic visibility from being conflated with speaker population, language vitality, or causal urban influence within a transparent and human-validated urban GeoAI research architecture.
