Abstract

This study aims at describing the use of hedging devices found in interpreting research data in finding and discussion section of students’ undergraduate thesis. It is focused on describing its types, functions and meaning used in finding and discussion section. In the data collection, the data was gathered by using descriptive qualitative method. The source of this research was taken from the statements and claims written in finding and discussion section of students’ undergraduate theses. The result of the data analysis showed that the most frequently used type and function of hedging was Approximator of Degree, Frequency, Time and Quantity and Attribute Hedge. It is caused that most of the writers often state a speculation, assumption, opinion or probability through their statement in which decreases the explicitness of a statement and hence enables the writer to be less direct and bald in communicating his/her meaning. It is also the signal that what they state is not completely true.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the implementation of rewards and punishment on the students’ motivation in English learning at eighth grade students’ of SMPN 7 Mataram in academic year 2022/2023. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. The sampling technique consisted purposive sampling, which included 4 English teachers, and 40 students. The data was collected involved observations, interviews, and questionnaires. The researcher utilized data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion as analysis techniques. The results showed that the teachers respond positively to the students who showed a lack of motivation by conducting monitoring students’ behavior and their participation during learning process. Rewards and punishment were applied should be consider the condition and situation occurred in the classroom. Meanwhile, the teachers applied punishment by understanding the characteristics of each student so they did not feel uncomfortable, or disturbed their psychological. giving rewards made the students more diligent was 70%. 95% students were happy with rewards. Meanwhile, 87.5% students more responsible, and 82.5% students obey the rules and behave well. Therefore, it can be inferred that learning motivation has increased, and the students’ undesirable behavior has decreased.

Abstract

Pemerolehan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing membutuhkan pembiasaan melalui berbagai aktivitas sehari-hari. Aktivitas santri mukim di asrama MTs Mu'allimat NWDI Pancor sangat memungkinkan bahasa Inggris dijadikan sebagai bahasa pengantar dalam komunikasi interaktif sehari-hari di lingkungan asrama sehingga dapat menumbuhkembangkan keberanian, mental, dan kemampuan bahasa lisan para santri. Namun keterbatasan jumlah tenaga pendidik, hal itu belum dapat dilakukan. Atas dasar itu, melalui kerjasama multipihak dengan mahasiswa dan relawan yang tergabung dalam English Speaking Club (ESC) Universitas Hamzanwadi, kegiatan pendampingan santri untuk menumbuhkan budaya komunikasi berbahasa Inggris menjadi target dalam pengabdian ini melalui metode pelatihan tutor. Dengan pembekalan materi dan metode pembelajaran interaktif, mereka bertugas mendampingi  santri dalam komunikasi interaktif sehari-hari. Hasil sosialisasi program ini menunjukkan bahwa tutor tersebut sangat antusias dan ada 20 orang calon tutor telah berhasil direkrut dan bersedia melakukan pendampingan. Pihak madrasah juga telah memberikan keluangan waktu empat hari seminggu untuk melakukan pendampingan tersebut.
