Abstract

Abstract Intelligence Quotient or commonly referred to as IQ is a term for grouping human intelligence which is believed to be a standard measure of intelligence for many years. One aspect of intellectual intelligence is memory. Some students who study in the Acupuncture Department find it difficult to memorize the lessons in the Acupuncture Department. The lack of research on the effects of acupuncture therapy in increasing a person's IQ score is the reason for the authors to conduct this study. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of acupuncture therapy in increasing the IQ (intelligence quotient) in students of the Acupuncture Department of the Health Polytechnic of Surakarta. This research is a pre-experimental pre-test and post-test design. The research will be conducted at the D-III Acupuncture Study Program in collaboration with the psychotest organizing institution, namely ANAVA Surakarta. The subjects of this study were 30 students of the Department of Acupuncture. The dependent variable is the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) score and the independent variable is acupuncture therapy at points HT 7 (Shenmen), GV 20 (Baihui), PC 6 (Neiguan) and SP 6 (Sanyinjiao). Data analysis using paired t test. There is a difference in mean IQ scores before and after acupuncture treatment. The mean value after acupuncture increased (mean=108) compared to the mean before acupuncture therapy (mean=101). Based on the analysis of the paired t test, the value of p <0.05 was obtained, which means it can be concluded that acupuncture therapy is effective in increasing the IQ (Intelligence Quotient) value. Acupuncture therapy is effective in increasing the IQ (Intelligence Quotient) in Acupuncture Department students.

Abstract

Insomnia is one of the most common health problems among older adults and can significantly reduce their quality of life if not properly managed. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be applied is self-acupressure. This community service program aimed to improve older adults’ knowledge and skills in performing self-acupressure and to enhance sleep quality among elderly participants at Posyandu Lansia Sejahtera Abadi IX, Gonilan, Kartasura, Sukoharjo. The program was conducted from March to April 2026 and consisted of health education sessions, self-acupressure training on Shenmen (HT7), Sanyinjiao (SP6), Anmian (EX-HN22), and Yintang (EX-HN3) acupoints, followed by four weeks of guided practice and monitoring. Program evaluation was carried out using pre-test and post-test assessments of participants’ knowledge, an observational checklist for acupressure skills, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to measure sleep quality. The results demonstrated an increase of more than 20% in participants’ knowledge scores, while over 80% of participants were able to perform self-acupressure correctly and independently. Furthermore, more than 70% of participants showed a reduction in PSQI scores, indicating improved sleep quality. In addition to improving sleep quality, the program enhanced participants’ self-care capacity and strengthened the role of community health volunteers in supporting elderly health promotion. Self-acupressure training proved to be a simple, safe, and feasible intervention with strong potential for integration into routine elderly health service programs to promote healthy aging and improve the quality of life of older adults.

Abstract

Background: Frozen shoulder is a musculoskeletal disorder characterized by shoulder pain and restricted range of motion caused by inflammation and fibrosis of the joint capsule. This condition may reduce functional ability and quality of life. Cupping therapy has been widely used as a complementary treatment for pain management; however, evidence regarding its effectiveness in patients with frozen shoulder remains limited. Objective: To analyze the effect of cupping therapy on pain intensity reduction in patients with frozen shoulder. Methods: This study employed a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. A total of 16 patients with frozen shoulder were recruited using purposive sampling. Pain intensity was measured before and after cupping therapy using a standardized pain assessment instrument. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with a significance level of 95% (α = 0.05). Results: The mean pain score before cupping therapy was 66.56 ± 25.82, while the mean pain score after therapy decreased to 37.44 ± 21.51. The average reduction in pain score was 29.13 ± 8.94 points. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test showed a p-value of 0.00043 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference between pre- and post-treatment pain scores. Conclusion: Cupping therapy significantly reduces pain intensity in patients with frozen shoulder. Therefore, cupping therapy may be considered a complementary non-pharmacological intervention for pain management in patients with frozen shoulder.
