Abstract

This study aims to identify the structural system of stilt houses in Mbawa Village and their connection between elements that support earthquake resistance. Field observations were used to observe the system, form, and building materials. They were mainly conducted on local structural systems and construction as a critical part of the building to anticipate seismic force. The connections between post and beam and the logic of structural loading interpretation are carried out. The research found some unique detail and system to respond to the seismic load. The local technique of pa’a and ceko, which developed empirically by communities during centuries can reduce the vulnerability of their houses..

Abstract

This study is aimed to examine which configurations of mortar covering give the best fire protection for the bamboo-plaster wall system. The research is done in two stages, first is the non-standardized pre-test stage which results will become the basis for determining the specimen specification. In the second stage, the specimen with the best fire resistance level is tested with a standardized test referred to SNI 1741-2008 and ISO 834-1-1999. Fire resistance performance was measured according to integration and insulation level expressed in minutes. In the pre-testing stage, bamboo-wall configurations with woven bamboo, and mortar plaster on one-sided and two-sided are evaluated according to the burning time and the highest temperature reached on the unexposed side. The pre-testing result shows that the chipped and cracked mortar conditions affect the high temperature of the specimen and the burning of the woven bamboo, and vice versa. In the standardized test in the second stage, it was found that the specimen with one-sided mortar had an insulation and integration level of 30 minutes, while the specimen with two-sided mortar was 120 minutes. These results indicate that the mortar condition and its location affect the fire resistance performance of the bamboo-plaster wall.

Abstract

==========================================================Available online: 09 April 2018 This article has been retracted by Indonesian Journal of Science and Technology Editorial team, following clear correspondence and confirmation with authors. The paper is retracted from 30 May 2021.==========================================================Bamboo applications become popular recently by the community due to the rise of environmental awareness, including for post-disaster building. Two aspects of post-disaster buildings were considered: i.e. its performance and its recyclability. This research explore ability of bamboo as tensile structure, and also as knock-down structure. Bamboo radial compression (barcom) connection was explored by these aspects. Barcom joint is one of the solutions to be  effectively used for gaining the tensile strength of bamboo by converting tensile load parallel to fiber into radial compression perpendicular to fiber. Barcom joint was tested to acquire its load capacity and its future improvement. The load test showed that the barcom connection could reach up to 21.61 kN. To improve this capacity, either better wire or special washer design could be proposed. The adaption in previous built structure (i.e. Three Mountain Building in Serangan island, Bali and knock-down bamboo geodesic dome in Colombia) was used as a case-study. In the construction of Three Mountain Building, barcom joint was used to hang the bamboo rafters and acts as tension-like member. Meanwhile, the use of barcom joint in Colombia was intended to connect the bamboo with the steel bowl connector which could be dismantled and reused again many times.

Abstract

Earthquake-prone environmental conditions require the vernacular community in Bima Regency to adapt by carrying out 'innovations' in their stilt houses' structural and construction systems. The bottom structure tends to remain, while the top tends to change. This study aimed to identify the differences in the types of wood joints between the elements and the roof construction on wooden stilts of Mbawa, Maria, Sambori, and Kole Village, Bima Regency, in the context of their adaptability to earthquakes. Case studies through observation and documentation are carried out for data collection and identification processes. The documentation results are then analyzed to ensure the connection type between the elements on each part of the roof truss. Five types of roof truss construction are found, each with some wood connection type: pin, rigid, and friction joint. The integration between joints of the roof truss with the unique construction developed to date has proven to adapt to earthquake-prone environments. The changes made by the community to improve the seismic adaptability of uma panggu show that the local seismic culture is still developing in Bima Regency.

Abstract

Public awareness of earthquake-resistant houses can increase the region's resilience to earthquake disasters. This study aims to conduct a comparison of two different groups of people on their opinion of earthquake-resistant housing variables and actions to increase the quality of their house. For supporting public awareness of earthquake-resistant houses, the purpose also determines the latent variables of earthquake-resistant houses and actions from the public for improving the quality of the residential building. This quantitative research begins by collecting the earthquake-resistant house attributes through journal reviews.  This study used a closed-ended questionnaire to collect data on public experiences of earthquake disasters. For data analysis, it used correlation analysis to determine the level of relationship between two variables and utilizes factor analysis to reduce the variable to a small number of factors. The two groups that have different experiences of earthquakes tend to have similar opinions about the characteristics of earthquake-resistant houses and the actions for improving the quality of residential buildings. The five factors of the earthquake-resistant housing are safe structural construction, fixed architectural elements, open accessibility, lightweight-ductile material, and simple floor plan. Then the three factors represent the actions for improving residential quality, namely, to improve material and structure, build an earthquake-resistant house, and make accessibility easy and safe.
