Abstract

Introduction. Probiotics are widely used in health research because it is considered to be beneficial for human health. Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota is one of the lactic acid bacteria which mostly found in commercial drink. This bactery can improve gut’s immunity towards pathogen by producing bacteriocin which is able to lower the pH in the gut. However it was found inappropriate probiotic product storaging, inappropriate way of consuming probiotic drink and the mixing of probiotic drink with other drinks randomly could disrupt the viability of probiotic bacteria which would reduce the benefits of the probiotic drink. Aim. The aim of this study is to observe the knowledge, attitude and behaviour level from students of faculty of medicine Universitas Sumatera Utara towards Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota in probiotic drink. Method. This is a descriptive research with cross sectional approach. The research is collecting primary data using questionnaire about knowledge, attitude and behaviour level towards Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota in probiotic drinks. Result. From 152 respondents who met all the criteria, there are 48,7% respondents have good knowledge level, 45,4% sufficient and 5,9% deficient. Moreover, there are 22,4% respondents have good attitude level, 47,4% sufficient and 30,3% deficient. Also, there are 77% respondents have good behaviour level, 21% sufficient and 2,0% deficient. Conclusion. Majority of respondents have good knowledge level, sufficient attitude level and good behaviour level towards Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota.

Abstract

AbstrakInfeksi Menular Seksual (IMS) masih menjadi tantangan kesehatan masyarakat dengan prevalensi cukup tinggi pada remaja di Sumatera Utara. Rendahnya literasi kesehatan reproduksi menyebabkan remaja rentan terhadap perilaku berisiko. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan meningkatkan pemahaman siswa sekolah menengah terkait kesehatan reproduksi dan pencegahan IMS melalui pendekatan edukatif terintegrasi. Program dilaksanakan di Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri 2 Medan (SMAN 2 Medan) dan Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan Negeri 6 Medan (SMKN 6 Medan) dengan melibatkan siswa, guru, serta orang tua. Tahapan kegiatan meliputi asesmen kebutuhan, penyuluhan interaktif, pemutaran video dan poster edukasi, pembagian buku panduan, pembentukan peer group melalui OSIS dan UKS sebagai Duta Anti-IMS, serta forum diskusi kelompok terarah (FGD). Evaluasi dilakukan menggunakan pre-test dan post-test. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan signifikan pada pengetahuan siswa. Nilai rata-rata pre-test sebesar 56.8 ± 12.4 meningkat menjadi 82.5 ± 10.7 pada post-test (p < 0,001). Sebanyak 72% siswa yang sebelumnya berada pada kategori pengetahuan cukup berubah menjadi kategori baik setelah intervensi. Selain itu, keterlibatan aktif siswa dalam diskusi dan pembentukan peer group memperkuat peran sekolah sebagai pusat promosi kesehatan reproduksi. Luaran tambahan berupa media edukasi cetak, video, publikasi ilmiah ber-ISSN, serta buku ajar sekolah turut mendukung keberlanjutan program. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa pendekatan partisipatif di sekolah efektif meningkatkan literasi kesehatan reproduksi remaja serta mendukung pencapaian SDGs poin 3. Kata kunci: kesehatan reproduksi; infeksi menular seksual; remaja; edukasi kesehatan; peer group; pengabdian masyarakat. Abstract Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) remain a public health challenge with a relatively high prevalence among adolescents in North Sumatra. Low reproductive health literacy makes adolescents more vulnerable to risky behaviors. This community service program aimed to improve secondary school students’ understanding of reproductive health and STI prevention through an integrated educational approach. The program was conducted at State Senior High School 2 Medan (SMAN 2 Medan) and State Vocational High School 6 Medan (SMKN 6 Medan), involving students, teachers, and parents. The stages of the program included needs assessment, interactive health education, presentation of educational videos and posters, distribution of handbooks, peer group formation through OSIS and UKS as Anti-STI Ambassadors, and focus group discussions (FGDs). Evaluation was carried out using pre-test and post-test questionnaires. The results indicated a significant improvement in students’ knowledge. The mean pre-test score of 56.8 ± 12.4 increased to 82.5 ± 10.7 in the post-test (p < 0.001). Furthermore, 72% of students who initially had only moderate knowledge shifted to the good knowledge category after the intervention. Active participation in discussions and peer group formation also strengthened the role of schools as centers for reproductive health promotion. Additional outputs included printed educational materials, videos, ISSN-accredited scientific publications, and a school handbook, all of which supported program sustainability. These findings highlight that participatory school-based approaches are effective in enhancing adolescent reproductive health literacy and contribute to achieving SDG 3. Keywords: reproductive health; sexually transmitted infections; adolescents; health education; community service.
