Abstract

Creating creative theme-based lesson plans for teaching English to young learners is essential. Therefore, primary English teachers should have creativity in designing their lesson plans. This study aimed to identify the creativity features in the teachers’ lesson plans and to reveal the considerations taken by the teachers. This study employed qualitative research and applied descriptive study as its framework. This study used teachers’ documents and interviews in data collection. The respondents of this study were three primary English teachers who taught at three different schools in Bandung. The results of this study showed that there were five creativity features of the teachers found in teachers’ lesson plans: profiling meaning and purpose; foreground potent affectively engaging texts and media; fostering play; encourage collaborations and making connections; and fostering originality. Moreover, the findings from the interviews showed that the teachers had their own consideration in choosing the designed activities which was different from one another. The results of this research can enrich creativity literature in education and help primary English teachers to be knowledgeable, discover, and develop their creative abilities in designing theme-based lesson plans.

Abstract

There needs to be more literature regarding English teachers' perspectives on the actual practice of extensive reading in the classroom in Indonesia. Therefore, a study aimed to investigate the implementation of extensive reading based on the teachers' perspectives. This study employed a qualitative research method as the research design. The participants were two senior high school English teachers and two junior high school English teachers. Interviews were conducted as the data collection and transcribed for the data analysis. The results showed that all English teachers had acknowledged and were well-informed of the benefits of extensive reading. However, half of them projected their positive beliefs through implementing extensive reading in their teaching practice, but the other half did not. The obstacles found in applying extensive reading were the students' need for more interest in reading, their lack of vocabulary mastery, and opposing views toward reading. Therefore, this insight into the study's results has enriched the literature, and the stakeholder of the curriculum should provide support regarding the teachers' concern about implementing extensive reading. Keywords: perspective, implementation, extensive reading

Abstract

Understanding teachers’ teaching philosophy is central to their professional growth, yet research on experienced EFL teachers’ reflective practice in Indonesia remains limited. This study addresses the gap by exploring how experienced teachers conceptualize their teaching philosophy through reflection. A qualitative case study was conducted with three experienced Indonesian EFL teachers, each holding more than nine years of teaching experience and a master’s degree in English education. Data were collected through six rounds of semi-structured interviews and reflective journals, guided by established reflective frameworks. Triangulation was applied to ensure trustworthiness, and thematic analysis was used to interpret the data. Eight themes emerged: (1) the role of English in formal schooling, (2) external influences on teaching, (3) perceptions of being a teacher, (4) experiences of teaching English, (5) challenges in English instruction, (6) strategies for managing classroom problems, (7) adaptation of teaching methods, and (8) critical incidents shaping professional identity. These findings highlight how personal experiences, contextual constraints, and reflective engagement shape teachers’ philosophies and practices. The study demonstrates that reflective practice enables teachers to align pedagogical choices with their evolving philosophy, fostering professional identity and responsiveness to learners’ needs. The results resonate with global literature on reflective teaching while emphasizing the Indonesian context.
