Abstract

Seasonal and oceanographic variability can influence the movement ecology of migratory seabirds by altering environmental conditions along their migration routes. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of seasonal and oceanographic variability on the timing and spatial patterns of Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) migration in Indonesian waters. A quantitative observational approach was applied using satellite tracking to characterize migration timing, duration, movement speed, and spatial routes across different monsoon periods. Migration records were integrated with sea surface temperature, wind speed and direction, and seasonal conditions, followed by temporal, spatial, correlation, and regression analyses. The results showed that migration during the southeast monsoon was characterized by shorter duration, higher movement speed, and more direct routes, whereas the northwest monsoon was associated with longer duration, lower movement speed, and more dispersed trajectories. Sea surface temperature was associated with migration timing, while wind conditions were related to movement performance. The findings indicate that migration patterns reflect interactions between seasonal marine conditions and behavioral flexibility. Long-term integration of satellite tracking and oceanographic monitoring is therefore important for identifying environmentally sensitive migration periods and supporting adaptive conservation of migratory seabirds in Indonesian waters

Abstract

Artificial light at night is an environmental disturbance that can alter natural conditions and influence the behavior of nocturnal wildlife, including fruit bats. This study aimed to examine the relationship between light intensity, nocturnal activity patterns, and hunting or foraging performance of fruit bats (Pteropus spp.) in an agroforestry environment. A quantitative correlational approach was applied by measuring nighttime light intensity using a digital lux meter at several observation points representing different illumination conditions. Nocturnal activity and hunting or foraging behavior were systematically observed during nighttime periods, and the relationships among the observed variables were evaluated using correlation analysis. The results showed that increasing light intensity was associated with decreasing nocturnal activity and hunting or foraging frequency. Fruit bats were more active in darker areas, while locations with greater illumination showed lower levels of movement and food-searching activity. These findings indicate that nighttime illumination is an important environmental factor associated with the behavioral patterns of fruit bats in agroforestry landscapes. Maintaining dark habitat patches, vegetation cover, and appropriate nighttime lighting management may therefore contribute to the conservation of fruit bats and support their ecological functions within managed tropical landscapes.

Abstract

Background: Increasing droughts caused by climate change have significant impacts on the agricultural sector, particularly on household food security. Purposed: To examine farmers' perceptions of the impact of horticultural crop diversification as an adaptation strategy to improve food security in drought-prone areas. Research Method: A quantitative approach using a survey method based on questionnaires distributed to farmers involved in horticultural crop diversification. Household food security was measured using the Household Food Security Index (IKP), and linear regression analysis was used to assess the impact of crop diversification on food security. Results: Horticultural crop diversification can improve household food security, particularly in drought-prone areas. Social, economic, and agricultural resource access factors have a significant impact on food security, with access to agricultural resources having the greatest effect. The validity and reliability tests show that the instruments used in this study are valid and reliable. In addition, the normality, multicollinearity, and heteroscedasticity tests indicate that the data meet the assumptions required for regression analysis. This study concludes that horticultural diversification is an effective adaptation strategy in dealing with the impacts of climate change and improving household food security, with recommendations to increase access to agricultural resources and support crop diversification programs in drought-prone areas.
