Abstract

This study explores the evolution of infrastructure and facilities at Al-Ustmani Islamic Boarding School in Bondowoso, East Java, focusing on how the institution balances traditional Salafiyah values with modern educational demands. Researchers used a qualitative descriptive method to gather data through semi-structured interviews, on-site observations, and document reviews. Perspectives from caregivers, teachers, administrators, and students were analyzed to reveal how infrastructure advancements relate to educational quality. The findings show a significant transition from basic facilities to modern, well-equipped structures, guided by a strategic approach to enhance learning environments while preserving the pesantren’s traditional identity. Improvements such as modernized classrooms, dormitories, libraries, and vocational training centers have led to greater student engagement and academic achievement. This harmonious integration of Islamic traditions with formal education has solidified the school’s role in fostering religious, intellectual, and socio-economic progress. Innovative initiatives like independent business units and vocational training programs demonstrate the pesantren’s commitment to preparing students for contemporary challenges. Information technology and entrepreneurship training underscores the school’s dedication to comprehensive student development. These advancements highlight the institution’s ability to adopt globalization and technological innovations without sacrificing its cultural and educational principles. This research contributes to discussions on the evolution of Islamic education by offering a replicable framework for merging traditional values with modernity in pesantren. It emphasizes the importance of holistic management to maintain relevance and excellence in an ever-changing educational landscape.

Abstract

This article explores and develops an ecopedagogical learning model grounded in Islamic environmental fiqh within the context of urban Islamic schools. The findings reveal that integrating core Islamic ecological principles such as khalifah (human stewardship), maslahah (public benefit), hima (environmental protection zones), and the prohibition of ifsad (destruction) enriches contemporary ecopedagogical values with strong spiritual and normative foundations. The model is contextualized to address the unique challenges of urban Islamic schools, including limited green spaces, air pollution, and consumerist culture. Implementation shows that urban contexts can become critical ecological learning spaces through green practices such as energy conservation, waste management, and school-based environmental advocacy. Moreover, this model holds promise as an alternative curriculum framework for Islamic schools aiming to implement systematic environmental education. By integrating thematic, interdisciplinary, and action-oriented approaches, the model emphasizes the development of students’ ecological character rooted in Islamic values and real-life engagement beyond mere cognitive understanding.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of inclusive education in rural Indonesia by focusing on the policy–practice gap and exploring how Islamic educational perspectives can contribute to bridging educational inequalities for children with disabilities. Specifically, it investigates how structural, socio-cultural, and governance-related factors shape access to inclusive education in peripheral village contexts. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design conducted in Wonorejo Village, Banyuputih District, Situbondo Regency. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, including village officials, teachers, parents, and disability activists, as well as participant observation and document analysis. The data were analyzed using an interactive model involving data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing, complemented by thematic analysis to identify patterns related to policy gaps, structural barriers, and Islamic educational values. The findings reveal that inclusive education in rural areas is characterized by multi-layered exclusion resulting from geographical isolation, limited infrastructure, weak local governance, and the absence of accurate disability data. Despite the existence of national and regional policies supporting inclusive education, their implementation at the local level remains largely symbolic and administrative. The study identifies a significant policy–practice gap, where inclusive education is not supported by adequate institutional readiness, teacher competence, or accessible facilities. Additionally, socio-economic constraints and cultural factors further limit the participation of children with disabilities in formal education. This study introduces a village-based analytical framework that shifts the focus from school-centered approaches to community and governance-based perspectives in understanding inclusive education. It also offers a novel theoretical contribution by integrating Islamic educational values, particularly justice (al-‘adl), equality (al-musawah), and universal compassion (rahmatan lil ‘alamin), as a normative foundation for inclusive education in Muslim-majority contexts. This study contributes theoretically by bridging global inclusive education discourse with Islamic educational philosophy, empirically by providing evidence from a rural and underrepresented context, and practically by proposing a village-based inclusive education model that emphasizes local governance, data-driven planning, and community participation. These contributions offer a more context-sensitive and culturally grounded approach to addressing educational inequality in rural areas.
