Abstract

Populism emerges as an antithesis to government elitism amidst the crisis of democracy. Some experts also note that populism will also create a new elite for the government itself. Some countries show that populism is also the beginning of authoritarianism, such as Poland. This research shows that the same thing happened in Indonesia at the end of Joko Widodo's administration. Through the theoretical approach of Dynastic Politics and Populism, this paper explains that Jokowi built his dynasty through populism, brought Indonesia towards an authoritarian state, and brought democracy to a decline. Jokowi did so through constitutional means so that his dynasty could be democratically legitimized. Gibran was able to run for Vice President with Prabowo Subianto after his uncle, Anwar Usman, the chief judge of the Constitutional Court, granted a motion to change the minimum age of candidacy. Previously, Kaesang managed to become the chairman of the Indonesian Solidarity Party, which also supports Gibran. Meanwhile, in 2020, Bobby Nasution also managed to win the election in Medan as Mayor. Some parties considered the election to be forced. Jokowi is considered one of the actors who brought Indonesia towards authoritarianism.

Abstract

The village chiefs in the Reform era in Indonesia were expected to transform from being servants of the state to being servants of their community. This hope was accompanied by a lot of support for regulatory changes to create economic equality for most local areas. However, 25 years after the Reform, the village chiefs still exercised great power so that they could easily influence and control the political participation of their citizens. Moreover, the village heads in the Reform era still came from the families of former or incumbent village heads who won the Pilkades because the wealth and connections that had been built for a long time with the villagers became the determinants of the victory of the old families. This article explains the efforts of village heads to maintain their influence so that they continue to be elected in every village head election because the power relations possessed by the old elites are still very influential for exchanging benefits as providers of life and as electoral assets. The art required data were collected in three selected villages such as Sagaherang Kidul Village, Sagalaherang Kaler Village, and Dayeuhkolot Village in Subang Regency, West Java, using a qualitative approach with descriptive method.

Abstract

AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic provides trials as well as lessons for the democratic system in Indonesia. This article examines and discusses the sustainability of democracy in Indonesia by reflecting on the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. The research method we use is qualitative with data collection techniques through observation, library research, and utilizing various online sources to analyze it. Our findings show that the government's strategy in anticipating the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced the level of democracy. This can be seen in the politicization of regulations which has led to the arrest and prosecution of civilians who disagree with the government. Second, the occurrence of executive aggrandisement by attracting opposition elites into the government so that there is no resistance in terms of handling COVID-19 and, third, the birth of a discourse on the perpetuation of executive power. If there are no efforts to correct the course of democracy, then Indonesian democracy will experience a deeper setback than during the COVID-19 pandemic.Keywords: COVID-19, Executive Aggrandisement, Democratic Regression, Authority AbstrakPandemi COVID-19 memberikan cobaan sekaligus pembelajaran terhadap sistem demokrasi di Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract Party leadership is an important aspect in showing the face of a political party to the public as voters. Several studies show that party leadership has a fairly strong influence in determining voting behavior (Liddle & Mujani, 2007). In the midst of the decentralization system in force in Indonesia, the presence of political parties at the regional level is thus a necessity, at least to reach voters at a more micro level. The touch between the community and the party at the regional level is certainly more intense compared to the party at the central level. The last four legislative elections in Bandung Regency (2004, 2009, 2014, and 2019), were always won by the Golkar party, until finally this dominance collapsed marked by the victory of the National Awakening Party (PKB) in the 2024 Bandung Regency legislative election. This victory occurred after the change in leadership of the National Awakening Party (PKB) at the regional level, in this case in Bandung Regency. Through the conceptual framework built by Stark (1996), related to the criteria for changing party leadership, this article aims to analyze in more depth how the change in leadership of the National Awakening Party of Bandung Regency can provide electoral incentives for the National Awakening Party's vote acquisition in the 2024 Bandung Regency legislative election. This article shows the factors of acceptance of party leaders by party members, electoral interest possessed by party leaders, and the competence of party leaders, which are supported by the factor of ownership of popular power as determinant factors that must be possessed by party leaders, as happened in the National Awakening Party (PKB) of Bandung Regency which succeeded in breaking the dominance of the Golkar Party in the 2024 Bandung Regency legislative election. Keywords: Change of Party Leadership, Popular Political Actors, PKB Abstrak Kepemimpinan partai menjadi aspek penting dalam menunjukkan wajah partai politik kepada publik sebagai pemilih.
