Abstract

Arabic language learning at the elementary level is often hampered by low student interest and motivation, as students frequently perceive the subject as difficult and tedious, a phenomen on observed at the An-Nahl Yosorejo Learning Center, Metro Timur. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Mahfuzat learning as aninnovative teaching strategy to increase students' interest in Arabic within a non-formal educational environment. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research focuses on the impact of Mahfuzat on students' affective indicators. Data were collected through participatory classroom observations, in-depth interviews with one teacher and five selected students, and documentation studies, then analyzed interactively through data reduction, display, and verification with triangulation techniques. The results indicate that the implementation of Mahfuzat significantly boosted student interest, evidenced by high active participation in recitation activities, improved concentration, and a shift to ward positive perceptions of Arabic. This effectiveness is attributed to the rhythmic repetition (singing) method, whic haligns with elementary-age characteristic sand a relaxed learning environment. This study concludes that Mahfuzat serves as a powerful pedagogical tool to bridge the gap between perceived difficulty and student engagement. Scientifically, this research contributes a practical framework for integrating traditional Arabic aphorisms into modern non-formal curricula to enhance affective learning. For future research, it is suggested to explore the impact of Mahfuzat on broader cognitive outcomes, such as vocabulary retention and speaking proficiency, across more diverted mographic populations.

Abstract

Arabic language learning, especially reading skills, often faces challenges such as low motivation and limited student engagement. Traditional approaches tend to focus on cognitive aspects while neglecting students’ interests and talents, which are important for effective learning. In Islamic boarding schools, where Arabic is essential for understanding religious texts, improving reading skills requires innovative and student-centered strategies. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of an interest- and talent-based approach in improving Arabic reading skills among students of Wali Songo Islamic Boarding School, Central Lampung. The study is grounded in the assumption that accommodating students’ interests and talents can enhance their learning motivation and generate a positive impact on the development of their language competencies, particularly reading skills. A qualitative method was employed through participant observation, interviews, and document analysis to explore the forms of program implementation and to analyze its influence on the development of students’ reading abilities. The findings reveal that the approach is implemented through various extracurricular activities, such as Arabic speech, drama, and book discussions, which are systematically integrated with classroom instruction. These activities contribute significantly to the improvement of students’ reading skills in terms of literal comprehension, inferential comprehension, and reading fluency, including accurate pronunciation and smooth delivery. Furthermore, the results indicate that engaging students in activities aligned with their interests strengthens their active participation and fosters a stronger connection with the Arabic language. In conclusion, the interest- and talent-based approach represents an effective educational strategy for enhancing Arabic reading skills, as it provides a motivating learning environment that integrates cognitive, skill-based, and affective dimensions, while making the Arabic language more relevant to students’ real-life experiences and interests.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of using Arabic crossword puzzle media in improving students’ understanding of Arabic grammar (nahwu) rules at Darul Ma’arif Islamic Boarding School, East Lampung. The background of this research is based on the importance of education as a key factor in societal progress, as well as the significance of the Arabic language—particularly grammar (nahwu)—in understanding Islamic texts. However, the teaching of nahwu is still largely dominated by traditional methods such as lectures and memorization, which often result in low student participation and difficulties in applying grammatical rules in practice. The objective of this study is to measure the effectiveness of crossword puzzle media as an interactive learning tool in enhancing students’ understanding of grammar rules, focusing on Jurumiyah-level students. The study employs a quantitative experimental method using a pretest-posttest design. Data collection techniques include tests, questionnaires, observations, interviews, and documentation. The results show a significant improvement in students’ understanding, with the mean score increasing from 69.50 in the pretest to 85.50 in the posttest, with a statistically significant difference (Sig. = 0.000 < 0.05). In addition, the crossword puzzle media proved effective in increasing students’ learning motivation, enhancing participation, and developing critical thinking and classroom interaction skills. In conclusion, the use of crossword puzzle media is an effective method in teaching Arabic grammar, particularly in Islamic boarding school environments, as it combines educational and entertaining elements. This study contributes academically to the development of Arabic language teaching methods through educational game-based learning. It also recommends broader use of interactive learning media and suggests further research with larger samples and different educational levels to obtain more comprehensive results.
