Abstract

The IK-CEPA was officially implemented in 2023 as a commitment between Indonesia and South Korea to cooperate in marketing and fulfil commodity needs, aiming for better and more sustainable economic development. This paper seeks to investigate the opportunities and challenges faced by Indonesia in implementing the IK-CEPA. The comparative method is applied to analyze the secondary data sourced from official publications on bilateral agreements between the two countries, and statistical data on investment, trade, and the country’s trade balance. A comparative data analysis was conducted by comparing the IK-CEPA with the previously implemented free trade agreement (FTA) in Indonesia with similar values, namely the IA-CEPA. In this paper, the IA-CEPA serves as a crucial point of comparison from which analytical results concerning the potential opportunities or challenges of the IK-CEPA were derived, focusing on several indicators like foreign direct investment (FDI) flow, trade value, and trade balance. The results show that Indonesia has the opportunity to: (1) increase the FDI value; (2) increase trade values with South Korea; and (3) improve the trade balance with South Korea to achieve a surplus. Two challenges for Indonesia in this endeavor include failure to achieve a trade balance surplus and the need for maximum utilization of the IK-CEPA by the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Abstract

Terrorism, like other forms of criminal activities, undergoes continual adaptation in response to societal changes and the passage of time. Recent studies have begun to explore the evolving nature of criminal activities conducted by terrorist groups that concurrently function as multinational crime syndicates, often referred to as ‘crime-terrorism.’ In this particular study applied the crime-terrorism framework by Rollins and Wyler, with a specific focus on the Abu Sayyaf Group as the subject of analysis. This paper delves into the Abu Sayyaf Group's motivation for transitioning into a crime-terrorist organization and examines the tactics employed by the group in carrying out their operations. Utilizing a qualitative research methodology aligned with the principles established by John W. Creswell, this study elucidates two significant findings: (1) the Abu Sayyaf Group's motivation for engaging in organized crime is primarily driven by the need to sustain its operations and support its members' livelihoods since the external funding sources is disrupted; and (2) the tactics practiced by the Abu Sayyaf Group include bomb attacks, kidnappings, extortion, and the provision of security for illicit activities such as the cultivation and trade of illegal cannabis. Keywords: Abu Sayyaf Group; Terrorism; Transnational Crime; Crime-Terrorism

Abstract

The present study aims at examining the use of declarative utterances for implying meaning. This study is qualitative research in which the data are gathered from the subtitle movie “Knight and Day and Day” consisting of declarative sentences. The findings reveal several examples in which declarative utterances are used to imply meaning, suggesting that language has more purpose than simple information exchange. Declarative sentences are not only employed as statements of fact but also as veiled requests or subtle commands. This highlights the dynamic nature of communication, where the intended meaning can differ significantly from the literal words spoken. Listeners cannot just assume that speakers always express themselves literally. Often, the meaning is layered and nuanced, thus requiring the listeners to consider not only the words themselves but also the surrounding contexts. This study suggests that individuals should be aware of the potential meaning implied in speech and seek to understand the speaker’s intended message.

Abstract

The current research aimed to uncover the use of the descriptive qualitative method in Korean linguistic studies, with the main objective of investigating how this method is applied in such research. This study is not merely theoretical but also practical, as it provides guidelines for conducting research in Korean linguistics using descriptive qualitative approaches. The objects of this study were scholarly articles and relevant books, as well as previous research reports selected through purposive sampling, analyzed using a qualitative approach with a library research method and documentation techniques for data collection. The findings reveal six stages in conducting Korean linguistic research with descriptive qualitative methods: problem identification, literature review, determining research objectives, data collection, data analysis and interpretation, and reporting of findings. Furthermore, data analysis involves four essential steps, namely data collection, data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. Although the descriptive qualitative method proves beneficial for research in Korean linguistics, it still presents challenges, particularly the potential subjectivity of researchers during data interpretation. Therefore, this research suggests that future studies should be supported by alternative perspectives, such as quantitative methods or a mixed-methods approach that combines both quantitative and qualitative methodologies in linguistic research.
