Abstract

This study aims to optimize the safety and reliability of the electrical systems on tourist ships in Labuan Bajo through Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA). The analysis identified key electrical components, including the battery and energy storage system, electric generator, charging system, and cables and connectors, as having high Risk Priority Numbers (RPNs). These components, if they fail, could significantly impact ship operations and passenger safety. The study emphasizes the importance of regular maintenance and early detection to prevent system failures and highlights critical areas, such as backup energy storage and power distribution, that require more attention. Despite having lower RPNs, components like the ship's lighting system and ventilation system still require maintenance to ensure smooth operation and passenger comfort. Additionally, the research revealed that proper load management of the electric generator is essential for extending its lifespan. It is recommended to limit the generator load to 60-86% of its maximum capacity to reduce the risk of overheating and enhance operational efficiency. By implementing these preventive measures, ship operators can enhance the reliability and safety of the electrical systems, leading to a safer and more comfortable experience for tourists while minimizing disruptions to operations. Overall, the findings show that FMEA is a valuable tool for optimizing the electrical systems of tourist ships, ensuring they operate with maximum efficiency and minimum risk.

Abstract

The operation of the engine on a ship is supported by sufficient fuel. Fuel is converted into mechanical energy to drive engines on the ship, such as the main engine and auxiliary engines. The Phinisi Natural 001 ship is one of the tourist ships that operates tourist services in the Komodo National Park Tourism area, so to support these activities it is necessary to have appropriate fuel requirements. There is a lack of information about the fuel requirements on this ship, so an analysis was carried out on the fuel consumption needs of the main engine on the Phinisi Natural 001 ship. This is important to be able to predict and prepare for fuel needs during tourist trips. Descriptive methods were used to support this activity, namely interview procedures, direct observation, regression analysis, work analysis and T Test. Based on the results obtained, significant differences were found between calculated and observed fuel consumption results on the 2D1N journey (p<0, 05), but in the 3D2N trip no significant differences were found (p>0.05). From the calculation results, the average amount of fuel used in the 2D1N and 3D2N travel programs was 95.31 liters and 146.66 liters, while the observation results obtained were 113.33 liters and 136.67 liters. The differences in the results of calculations and observations are caused by internal and external factors such as blockages in the nozzle, the ship floating, shipping routes, and weather influences, such as currents and sea waves during the trip.

Abstract

The starter system is a vital component in the main engine starting process on a ship, so its reliability is an important factor in ensuring smooth sailing operations. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of implementing preventive maintenance in improving the performance of the main engine starter system on a passenger ship. The study was conducted on the XYZ ship using a descriptive method through direct observation and interviews with the engineer officer. Data obtained included the physical condition of the battery, cable path, solenoid, and internal components of the starter dynamo, then analyzed based on performance parameters before and after preventive maintenance. The results showed several major problems, including heavy starter rotation, rapid battery voltage drop, loose cable connections, and damage to the solenoid. After implementing preventive maintenance such as adding battery water, cleaning terminals, tightening cable connections, and internal maintenance of the starter, there was a significant increase in engine starting speed, battery voltage stability, and starter response. The frequency of previously frequent problems also decreased drastically. The conclusion of this study is that preventive maintenance is proven to be effective in improving starter system performance, reducing the risk of starting failure, and supporting the smooth and safe operation of the ship as a whole. Implementation of scheduled preventive maintenance is recommended to ensure long-term reliability of the starter system.
