Abstract

This study aims to identify the types and levels of technology innovation adopted by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and cooperatives in Surakarta City, as well as to analyze its impact on their business development. A qualitative approach was applied using surveys, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions (FGD). The findings indicate that most SMEs have implemented input-level innovations through human resource (HR) training and alternative raw material utilization, but have yet to advance significantly in product development or production process innovation. Business process innovations, especially in digital marketing, have been more widely adopted and directly contributed to increased sales. Key driving factors for innovation include government-provided training programs and revenue growth post-innovation. Meanwhile, obstacles faced by SMEs include limited R&D and training budgets, and inadequate technological auditing capabilities. This study recommends optimizing the roles of local governments and universities in innovation facilitation and providing incentives to support innovation sustainability in the SME sector.

Abstract

This research proposes a market recognition enhancement of wayang purba, a traditional indigenous performance from Ngebung Village, Sragen Regency, through Geographical Indications (GIs) registration. The research applies qualitative methods to explore the roles of academia, business, government, community, and media using the Institutional Analysis Development (IAD) framework by Elinor Ostrom. The IAD framework delivers the authentic potential of Sragen as a prehistoric site and a part of Central Java with solid roots in wayang performances. On the contrary, the analysis also found that stakeholder support still needed to run partially, overlapping roles that failed to achieve collective efforts in carrying Wayang Purba to gain recognition of GIs. The importance of GIs in increasing market recognition of indigenous art products underlies research suggestions on managing the roles of stakeholders in a more integrated manner. Research recommendations align with previous literature that the GIs scheme is the right step for cultural marketing that needs to be managed collectively. Even so, an in-depth exploration of the duties and functions of each institution still needs to be implemented in future research.

Abstract

The City of Surakarta holds significant potential for innovation development; however, its growth has thus far been hindered by the lack of optimal engagement from various stakeholders, such as local government agencies, academia, and the private sector. The background of this study is to identify the factors that obstruct innovation growth and to formulate strategies that can improve the city's innovation score. The objective of this research is to develop policy recommendations that can strengthen the innovation ecosystem, as well as to draft a comprehensive roadmap to guide the effective implementation of innovation initiatives. The analysis shows that suboptimal engagement, lack of coordination among stakeholders, and limited capacity in human resources and technological infrastructure are the main challenges. The conclusion of this study emphasizes the importance of building a structured collaboration platform, developing human resource capacity, and preparing a clear innovation roadmap to achieve sustainable innovative growth. The implications of these recommendations include the need for adequate budget allocation, strengthened coordination among stakeholders, and intensive training to enhance skills in technology and innovation management. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of cross-sector collaboration strategies with technology and human capacity development into a holistic approach, along with the emphasis on active community participation in the innovation process. By implementing these recommendations, it is expected that the City of Surakarta can create an inclusive and sustainable innovation environment, which will ultimately support local economic growth and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
