Abstract

The teacher's lack of understanding of the use of technology in the classroom seems to be inversely proportional to the Merdeka Curriculum which requires teachers and students to be able to keep up with technological developments. Therefore, training on the use of the Canva application as a learning medium for elementary school teachers in Magelang was carried out as teacher professional development effort. The aim of this community service is to train elementary school teachers so they can develop their professionalism in developing interactive learning media that suits students' needs in the current era. By carrying out this community service in three different schools with a total of 22 participants, several stages were carried out. These stages consist of analyzing community problems, identifying problems, finding solutions to problems, preparing activities, implementing activities, evaluating activities and results. The evaluation results of this training activity showed that not only can the participants become more familiar with the Canva application, they are also trained to be able to design learning media in the form of presentations and videos using Canva. The participant satisfaction survey also showed positive results, in fact all participants agreed that they would continue to use Canva as a technology for designing learning media in the future. The root of this solution will certainly have an effect on the students' understanding of the participants later. If students have good academic achievements, they will become the next generation of the nation who can solve problems in this country, including poverty. However, this study was also conducted as a form of community service report which hopefully still can be a guideline and reading material for researchers regarding community service out there.

Abstract

Facing the post-Covid-19 pandemic, teachers need to enhance technology in their teaching and learning process, especially in delivering the materials for the students. As digital natives, students are familiar with technology, and it makes them excited in learning English materials. Academic writing materials are complex because it involves expressing ideas carefully elaborated, and well-supported, logically sequenced, rigorously reasoned, and tightly stitched together. Powtoon is one of the solutions to make the materials more interesting and understandable for the students in academic writing class. This study aims to know the students’ perspectives and challenges about the use of Powtoon as digital learning media to improve writing skills. The subjects are 37 students in English Department in one of the state universities in Indonesia. The method is qualitative by using questionnaire, interview, and documentation. It is found that the students have positive perceptions (76.92%) on the use of Powtoon as digital learning media to improve writing skills. Hence, Powtoon is recommended as digital learning media to improve the students’ writing skills. However, the motion of the animation could distract student's concentration in understanding the materials. Apart from that, students still need to ask directly to the teacher if they have not really understood about the materials presented using Powtoon.

Abstract

Sociolinguistics is the general term for the study of language that pays attention on the social aspects of language. This study focused on the role of language in society, or how members of various groups utilize language to communicate with one another. One of the many variations in language usage is slang. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to identify the types of slang and find the most frequent type of slang word in the "Last One Standing" song written by Skylar Grey. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach since the researcher described the word development process of slang words in the song in detail. Documentation method was used to collect data for this study, which subsequently employed Yule's (2010) word formation processes to examine the slang words. Only six of eleven kinds were identified by the researcher: etymology, coinage, compounding, blending, clipping, and acronym. Based on the data, clipping is the most frequent slang in this song. It is hoped that this study would aid future sociolinguistics research, particularly slang analysis.
