Abstract

This research is motivated by the not yet optimal application of differentiated learning where teachers have not accommodated students' learning needs, in the form of learning readiness, learning interest and student learning profile (style). This study aims to improve student learning activities and outcomes. Data collection techniques using instruments: (1) student activity observation sheets, and (2) learning achievement tests. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistical analysis and descriptive analysis. The results showed that: The average percentage of completeness of student learning outcomes in cycle I was 92%, increasing to 96% in cycle II. While the percentage of student learning activities in cycle I reached 90.25%, an increase of 92% in cycle II. From the results of the study it can be concluded that the application of differentiated learning through the Problem Based Learning learning model can optimize student learning activities and outcomes.

Abstract

John Dewey created a philosophical approach to education known as progressivism. Progressivism is an educational philosophy that wants student freedom and independence in the learning process. This philosophical also emphasizes a process of change which is marked by progress of teacher and student creativity. In Indonesia today, the application of the concept of independent learning has led to the development of students according to their interests and talents through differentiated learning, which of course is in accordance with the philosophy of progressivism. Progressivism requires student-centered learning to support progress, providing opportunities for students to become skilled and have the knowledge needed to be equipped to face educational progress according to the times.

Abstract

The failure to integrate differentiated learning in the classroom is the driving force behind this research. Mapping students’ learning needs is the first step in implementing individualized instruction in the classroom. Learning readiness, student interests, and learning profiles are three views on differentiated learning that can be used to map out students’ requirements. The purpose of this study is to enhance student learning experiences and results. Two devices are used for data collection: learning achievement exams and student activity observation sheets. Both descriptive statistical analysis and descriptive analysis were used to analyse the data. The average class score was 74 in the first cycle and improved to 84.4 in the second. Every student was able to meet the 75-point Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM) set by the school. It is possible to enhance student learning activities and outcomes by combining differentiated learning with the Problem Based Learning model, according to the study’s findings. In addition to offering a learning environment that puts students’ needs first, problem-based learning activities also benefit formative and summative learning through the third step of differentiation.
