Abstract

ABSTRACT. This study aims to describe students' critical thinking and mathematical communication skills Algebra material TIMSS type of question. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects were taken by 3 students each with high, medium and low math abilities in class VIII of SMPN 1 Jepara 2021/2022. Data was collected by means of critical thinking tests, mathematical communication, interviews and documentation. The data analysis technique was carried out in 3 stages, namely data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. The technique of checking the validity of the data is using the triangulation method. Critical thinking analysis, 1 student with high mathematical ability who fulfills all indicators while the other 2 students only meet 2 critical thinking indicators. Students with moderate mathematical ability 3 students who are only able to fulfill 1 indicator of critical thinking. Students with low mathematical abilities, 1 student who is only able to fulfill 1 indicator while the other 2 students are not able to fulfill all critical thinking indicators. For mathematical communication, students with high mathematical ability met 5 indicators of mathematical communication, 2 students with moderate mathematical ability met 3 indicators but the indicators achieved were different while 1 other student met 4 indicators of mathematical communication. 2 students with low mathematical ability met 1 indicator and 1 other student was not able to fulfill all mathematical communication indicators.Keywords: Critical Thinking, Mathematical communication, Mathematical skills, TIMSS ABSTRAK. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kemampuan berpikir kritis dan komunikasi matematis siswa pada materi Aljabar bertipe soal TIMSS. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Subjek diambil masing-masing 3 siswa dengan kemampuan matematika tinggi, sedang dan rendah kelas VIII SMPN 1 Jepara 2021/2022. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan tes berpikir kritis, komunikasi matematis, wawancara dan dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data dilakukan 3 tahap yaitu reduksi data, penyajian data dan penarikan kesimpulan. Teknik pemeriksaan keabsahan data menggunakan triangulasi metode. Berdasarkan hasil analisis berpikir kritis, terdapat 1 siswa dengan kemampuan matematika tinggi memenuhi seluruh indikator sedangkan 2 siswa lainnya hanya memenuhi 2 indikator berpikir kritis. Siswa dengan kemampuan matematika sedang terdapat 3 siswa hanya mampu memenuhi 1 indikator berpikir kritis. Sedangkan siswa dengan kemampuan matematika rendah terdapat 1 siswa hanya mampu memenuhi 1 indikator sedangkan 2 siswa lainnya tidak mampu memenuhi seluruh indikator berpikir kritis. Untuk komunikasi matematis, siswa dengan kemampuan matematika tinggi memenuhi 5 indikator komunikasi matematis, 2 siswa dengan kemampuan matematika sedang memenuhi 3 indikator namun indikator yang dicapai berbeda sedangkan 1 siswa lainnya memenuhi 4 indikator komunikasi matematis. 2 siswa dengan kemampuan matematika rendah memenuhi 1 indikator dan 1 siswa lainnya tidak mampu memenuhi seluruh indikator komunikasi matematis dengan tepat.Kata Kunci: Berpikir kritis, Komunikasi matematis,Kemampuan matematika,TIMSS

Abstract

This research aims to describe junior high school students' mathematical communication skills in Quadratic Function material. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects were taken from 2 students each with high, medium and low mathematics abilities in class IX of SMP Negeri 6 Semarang 2023/2024. Data collection was carried out using mathematical communication tests, interviews and documentation. The data analysis technique was carried out in 3 stages, namely data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. The data validity checking technique uses the triangulation method. Based on the results of research conducted by researchers, it was found that subjects with high mathematical abilities and subjects with moderate mathematical abilities were able to fulfill all the mathematical communication indicators given in the questions/problem solving. These indicators are 1) Ability to express problem situations in pictures or graphs (drawing) 2) Ability to express problem situations in the form of mathematical models (mathematical expressions) 3) Ability to explain the solution of ideas or situations from an image given in the model mathematics is in the form of mathematical writing (writing). Meanwhile, subjects with low mathematical abilities are unable to fulfill all the mathematical communication indicators given in the questions/problem solving.
