Abstract

This research focuses on nominalization, semantic roles or theta roles, and the functions of nominalizations in Joe Rogan’s Youtube Podcast entitled “Israel is Starting WW3”. This research is conducted based on two fundamental matters. The first one is that this research wants to reveal how the participants or speakers in the podcast create messages on this Israel-Palestine conflict since they are both American but one of them is middle-eastern mixed race. The second thing is due to the fact that there are still no research that combine the focus as what this research does which is the analysis of nominalizations, theta roles, and the functions of nominalizations. By combining these as the focus, this research aims to reveal not just on syntactic and semantic level but beyond those two approaches since this research also analyzes the functions of nominalization on the Podcast. This is a qualitative descriptive research for it’s data are multiple and holistically constructed and cannot be taken away from the context. In order to perform. The research findings show the total of 62 Data in both active and passive sentences. The findings also show that the roles are mostly agent-patient in active sentences and the functions are mostly to create framing of certain topic.

Abstract

This research focuses on revealing the form, logical meaning, and role of conjunctions from the discourse of presidential candidate Anies Bawedan towards the results of the 2024 Indonesian presidential election. The focus of this research is done  by using a discourse analysis approach through the lens of Systemic Functional Linguistics, especially on conjunctions. The conjunction theory used belongs to Martin and Rose in Wiratno. The paradigm of this research is qualitative research because the nature of reality of this research is plural and constructed holistically based on its context. The data in this study were collected using purposive sampling technique. The method used in this research is the listening method (accessing and watching a video on YouTube entitled “Pesan Anies Baswedan Usai Kalah Quick Count, Minta Pendukung Relawan Lawan Kecurangan" uploaded on the MerdekaDotCom YouTube channel), with a follow-up technique, namely the note-taking technique by transcribing Anies Baswedan's oral speech in the video. The data analysis procedure of this research uses the discourse analysis model through description, interpretation, and ends with explanation. The results of this study show that 1) the external conjunction of addition is more often used by Anies Baswedan to expand events (ideology), 2) the internal conjunction that Anies often uses is the internal conjunction of inferential consequence to conclude the logic built previously. The results show that there are 118 infringements of the maxims that fulfill the types of all the maxim of quality, quantity, manner, and relevance as well as the motives This research finds out that the story is dominated by the infringement of the maxim of relevance to control information flow which aligns with the novel’s purpose as a crime-solving detective novel.

Abstract

This research attempts to find and describe the types and factors of English nouns and verbs morphological inflection from the student's assignments. This research can also be seen as one form of language development research since it also discusses the factors of the mistakes that the students commit in the making of the assignment. The assignment was to write a paragraph about anything in English then the outcome was analyzed to find the morphological inflection mistakes and classify the data based on the criteria. This research applies descriptive qualitative design and uses observation for the data collecting technique and later uses document analysis. The techniques in this research are Spradley's domain, taxonomy, and componential analysis. This research finds 16 data of inflectional mistakes that fulfill the three categories of the factors while the discussion shows that the factor following each type is dominated by unfamiliarity with inflectional rules whereas the dominant type of inflectional mistake is omission. The conclusion shows that the most common mistakes happen in nouns by the supports from Tomasello's Usage-based theory (2009). Finally, the students mostly fail on noun inflection because they are unfamiliar with the inflectional rules of nouns.
