Abstract

This research aims to improve the understanding of science concepts among students at MTsN 1 Kepulauan Sula through the application of the inquiry learning model. This Classroom Action Research was conducted in three cycles, with 29 eighth-grade students as research subjects. Data was collected through concept understanding tests, learning observations, and interviews. The results show an improvement in students' understanding of science concepts from cycle I to cycle III, with the class average score increasing from 65.8 to 78.5, and the percentage of students reaching the Minimum Competency Criteria increasing from 48% to 79%. Student activity in learning also showed improvement, evident from increased participation in group discussions, ability to ask questions, and formulate hypotheses. Challenges in applying the inquiry model, such as limited resources and adaptation to local context, were addressed through the use of local materials and contextualization of learning materials. This study concludes that the inquiry learning model, with appropriate adaptations, is effective in improving students' understanding of science concepts in Indonesia's outer island regions. These findings have important implications for efforts to improve the quality of science learning in similar areas.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze students' learning difficulties in the subject of Natural Sciences (IPA) at MTsN 1 Kepulauan Sula and the measures to address them. Employing a qualitative approach with a descriptive case study method, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis over eight weeks. The findings indicate that students struggle with understanding abstract concepts such as force, motion, energy, and atomic structure due to insufficient teaching aids and practical exercises. Limited resources and facilities, such as inadequately equipped laboratories and restricted access to information and communication technology (ICT), also hinder the teaching and learning process. Low student motivation, varying levels of academic ability among students, and inadequate parental involvement in home learning are additional factors affecting learning difficulties. Proposed measures include enhancing teaching quality through teacher training, utilizing local resources, and strategies to boost student motivation. Differentiated learning approaches to address varying academic abilities and increased parental involvement are also recommended. These findings provide insights into the challenges of teaching IPA in remote areas and recommend developing educational policies better suited to local contexts.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi hubungan antara lingkungan belajar yang kondusif dengan prestasi belajar siswa pada mata pelajaran Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam (IPA) di tingkat Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP). Menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan desain studi kasus kolektif, penelitian ini melibatkan tiga SMP di wilayah urban, sub-urban, dan rural di Indonesia. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi partisipan, wawancara mendalam, fokus grup diskusi, dan analisis dokumen, melibatkan total 90 siswa, 18 guru IPA, 3 kepala sekolah, dan 30 orang tua siswa.Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan lima tema utama yang mempengaruhi hubungan antara lingkungan belajar dan prestasi belajar IPA: (1) kondisi fisik lingkungan belajar, (2) iklim sosial-emosional kelas, (3) metode pembelajaran dan penggunaan teknologi, (4) dukungan orang tua dan masyarakat, serta (5) kualitas dan motivasi guru. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa lingkungan belajar yang kondusif tidak hanya ditentukan oleh fasilitas fisik, tetapi juga oleh interaksi kompleks antara berbagai faktor psikososial.Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa upaya peningkatan prestasi belajar IPA memerlukan pendekatan holistik yang mempertimbangkan berbagai aspek lingkungan belajar. Rekomendasi yang diajukan meliputi peningkatan fasilitas pembelajaran, pengembangan profesional guru yang berfokus pada penciptaan iklim kelas positif, integrasi teknologi dalam pembelajaran, pelibatan aktif orang tua dan masyarakat, serta kebijakan yang mendukung peningkatan kualitas dan motivasi guru IPA.
