Abstract

Abstract This article focuses it’s attention on the shift in people's mindset for an activity of tapping sugar palm sap which the Minahasa people, including Toulour ethnic group, know as batifar. Batifar process is divided into (1) prebatifar stage which includes searching, cleaning, determining, applying and preparing stage; (2) batifar stage which is tapping stage itself; and (3) post-batifar stage which is the stage of thanksgiving. Initially, the cycle was carried out consistently by the local community, completed with various rituals and expressions in Toulour language, but as time went by, the cycle experienced reduction and material substitution. This problem indicates a change or shift in society's mindset. In order to answer these assumptions, this research apply a qualitative method based on field studies which utilizes abilities and intelligence of researcher as instrument to observe, study, and analyze research objects in natural setting. The research results show that reduction in batifar cycle changes batifar process to just searching, cleaning, preparing and tapping stages; an well as eliminating ritual element in each stage. Meanwhile, substitution occurs because bamboo material is replaced with plastic material. This reduction and substitution occurred because there was advanced understanding about the environment, a fast-paced work culture, adequate facilities, and strengthening of modern belief which replaced tradition that was not in accordance with modern religious dogma.
