Abstract

Purpose – This study aimed to assess the immunization status of children in the rural suburbs of Sokoto state. The study aimed to examine the knowledge and perception of the respondents towards immunization, their vaccination coverage, and factors that may influence their immunization status.Design/methods/approach – This study, which took place in Sokoto state, Nigeria, used a questionnaire as the data collection instrument for a descriptive observational survey. The participants in the study consisted of opinion/community leaders, community men and women, and healthcare providers from the study area. The study population encompassed all people in the region under investigation. The sample size was 300 respondents selected through cluster sampling, and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the X2 test.Findings – The study’s respondents were primarily male (66.7%), with a significant female population (33.3%), all aged 26-35. The majority were married (66.7%) and had tertiary education (66.7%), while some had secondary (16.7%) or primary education (16.7%). Immunization knowledge was primarily obtained through friends (66.7%) and healthcare workers (33.3%), with the expected time to begin immunization after nine months of age. All respondents had vaccinated their children and possessed vaccination cards. Factors affecting immunization included socioeconomic status (33.3%), beliefs (26.7%), geographic barriers (16.6%), and awareness (16.7%). The DPT1/DPT3 immunization coverage rate was 85%.Research implications/limitations – This study offers valuable insights for developing effective immunization programs in rural areas. The findings highlight the importance of educating friends and family members and promoting high levels of awareness and motivation towards immunization to encourage the adoption of similar strategies. However, it is essential to note that the study’s focus on immunization in children may limit its relevance to other age groups. Practical implications – Immunization is crucial for saving lives and protecting individuals, families, and communities from various diseases, offering profound benefits beyond health. This study has practical implications for policymakers, researchers, healthcare providers, students, and non-governmental organizations who can benefit from its findings to improve immunization strategies.Originality/value – This study provides valuable insights into the immunization status of children in rural areas of Sokoto state, highlighting the importance of education, awareness, and motivation towards immunization to promote higher vaccination coverage rates and improve public health.Paper type Research paper

Abstract

The focused aim of this paper is to utilize review/concept methods of research to elucidate drug abuse and its effects on education. The paper, therefore, explains drug abuse under the following: Negative effects on academic performance, elicitation of malnutrition, instigation of ill-health, causing absenteeism, factors increasing drug abuse, features of drug abusers, theories, causes, effects, and prevention. Indeed, drug abuse education in many ways, to save many of our youngsters interventions are needed. The research methodology employed a systematic literature review approach, which involved identifying, selecting, and analyzing relevant academic sources pertaining to the impact of drug abuse on school children. The initial step included searching of various databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and academic library catalogs using keywords related to drug abuse, elementary education, and child development. Following the search process, articles were screened based on inclusion criteria, including publication date, relevance to the research topic, and methodological rigor. Subsequently, the selected literature was synthesized to identify common themes, patterns, and findings regarding the adverse effects of drug abuse on academic performance, social behavior, and overall well-being among elementary school students. The results of the literature review underscored the urgent need for targeted prevention and intervention strategies to address the multifaceted challenges posed by drug abuse in elementary school settings.

Abstract

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) has to be preserved to prevent losses and ameliorate food security. Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) and neem (Azadirachta indica) extracts are useful to extend shelf life of tomato. This paper performed a review of tomato and use of neem and turmeric for its storage/ preservation. This paper mostly, will discuss the tomatoes under the following headings: history, biological nature, taxonomy, postharvest importance, utilization of neem and turmeric for its storage, economic benefits, and disadvantages of using artificial preservatives.

Abstract

The objective of this work is to explain the harms of plastics present in water as they affect humans and relations. Plastics are major polymers in contemporary dealings of human endeavors. They are synthesized through the addition or condensation of monomer units and serve humans with their distinguishing benefits such as the ability to be processed to various things by molding. Extensive uses of plastics show that all human activities use plastic for one purpose or the other. Water utilized by humans is in constant contact with plastics indicating a probable pollution that affects human health. This paper reviews the role of water in the body (systems), types of plastics, types of plastics, harm to animals, concerned behaviors of plastics, harmful contents, and management. There is a need for enlightenment, and strict laws (policies).

Abstract

Nowadays, the consumption of empty calories is predominating in various societies, including among the children. This is sad, because it is link to adversaries such as hypertension, cancer, diabetes, etc.  Thus, this study examined the role of parents in curbing empty calorie consumption among primary school children using a survey method among 160 respondents (key informants).  A questionnaire was utilized in conducting the survey research and the findings revealed that parents play a significant cognitive and behavioral role in promoting healthy eating habits among children. Cognitive roles included providing basic nutrition education (63.8%), helping children understand food labeling (21.3%), and meal planning (15.0%). Behavioral roles included demonstrating healthy eating (23.8%), providing healthy food options (38.1%), and monitoring food intake (19.4%). However, factors such as poor nutritional awareness (35.0%), poverty (41.9%), and work-life balance (23.1%) hindered parental involvement. Initiatives to improve parental involvement included creating nutritional awareness (49.4%), legislation (20.0%), job creation (13.1%), and counseling on work-life balance (17.5%). The study highlights the importance of parental involvement in promoting healthy eating habits among children.
