Abstract

This paper explains millennial Islamic students' social identity, manifested in the figures of Gus and Ning in Islamic boarding schools. The research examines millennial students' lifestyle, culture, and actions at the Al Ikhsan Beji Islamic Boarding School. The research methodology uses descriptive qualitative methods. The study results show that Islamic boarding schools' social practices experience de-routinization as a response of students to digital technology. This deroutinization began with the modern behavior and lifestyle of Gus and Ning, which spread widely among students and formed a new identity for Islamic students as millennial Islamic students. This identity is manifested in the fashionable style of dress of the students, the ability of the students to speak foreign languages (Arabic and English), the creativity of the students in various Islamic boarding school events, and the behavior of the students in using social media. This research shows that millennial Islamic students' social identity differs from traditional Islamic students. Millennial Islamic students tend to be liberal, while traditional Islamic students are synonymous with conservative traits. Gus and Ning are ideal figures for millennial Islamic students.

Abstract

This article analyses the representation of women in two popular advertisements, "Lux – Isyana Sarasvati" and "Pantene – Labels Against Women", through the lens of socialist feminist theory. The study focuses on the portrayal of women's roles, identities, and societal expectations within these advertisements, as well as the messages conveyed regarding gender construction. The application of socialist feminist theory aims to examine the role of advertising in either reinforcing or challenging traditional stereotypes about women through its connection to social, economic, and power structures. The "Lux – Isyana Sarasvati" advertisement emphasizes the image of a beautiful and graceful woman as a symbol of social status, whereas "Pantene – Labels Against Women" raises awareness of gender-based discrimination by critiquing the social labels attached to women. The analysis reveals that although both advertisements attempt to promote a positive image of women, they remain entangled within capitalist narratives that commodify women's bodies and identities. This article also underscores the need for a more critical and progressive approach to the portrayal of women in advertising media, one that better reflects women’s social roles in an equitable and empowering manner.

Abstract

This article examines the phenomenon of nyantri (studying at pesantren) in the digital era as a manifestation of cultural and religious identity in the context of rapid social change. The purpose of this research is to understand the function of nyantri as a means of preserving and shaping personal and social identity amidst the currents of globalization and the development of digital technology. This research also aims to identify and analyze the personal and social identities of students in the digital era. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with in-depth interview techniques and participatory observation at Pondok Pesantren Al Ikhsan Beji, Banyumas, Central Java. The research results show that although the pesantren have adapted to technological developments, traditional values remain the main foundation in the process of education and character formation of the students. Students utilize social media and technology to broaden their religious horizons, while still maintaining conventional religious practices. The digital era brings challenges for students in managing change, but it also opens up space for innovation in showcasing their identity. In the digital era, being a student remains relevant as a means of forming a strong identity, despite shifts in the methods and practices used
