Abstract

This study analyzed the differences in male and female speaking skills such as organization, opinion, rebuttal, sentence structure, and fluency in debate activities. This study used descriptive-qualitative methods and collected the data by using observations, audiovisual recordings, and interviews. As a result, male students were better than female students in constructing speeches, presenting their arguments, responding to opponents, organizing sentences, lexical hedges, and intensifiers in their sentences, and speaking their own words fluently. They could understand the main points, rephrase sentences, use reinforcing words, and sometimes produce pauses. On the contrary, female students were unsuccessful in delivering the main points, using unfinished sentences, repeating the sentences, using lexical hedges and intensifiers, and producing frequent pauses in debate activities. Thus, teachers should use different methods in teaching, assessing, and measuring the speaking ability of male and female students in debate activities, particularly in Speaking classes.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the students’ perceptions on using Quizizz, a tool for online gamified quiz, in Basic English Grammar lesson for the first-semester students of English Education Department, State University of Manado. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method by collecting data using observation and closed ended questionnaires with 30 students. It explores students' views on the effectiveness, ease of use, and motivational impact of Quizizz. The findings show that most students have positive opinions about the application, with many agreeing that Quizizz enhances their grammar learning, makes lessons more enjoyable, and is user-friendly. Quizizz was also found to encourage independent learning and facilitate engagement with the material. Despite the overall positive feedback, some students expressed concerns about the tool’s applicability to subjects beyond grammar. These results suggest that while Quizizz is effective for teaching Basic English Grammar, further adaptation may be needed to expand its use in other areas of study. Overall, Quizizz proves to be a valuable educational tool.

Abstract

This study investigates how local literature can support the development of critical literacy and multicultural awareness with the deep learning approach. This study uses literature review method by analyzing some relevant studies published between 2020 to 2025. This review analyzed 22 studies published between 2020–2025 from Google Scholar, ERIC, Scopus, and DOAJ. The studies reported about the usage of cultural text, critical literacy practice, multicultural and the principles of deep learning in language learning context. The study presents that local literature provides meaningful context and relate to students’ local traditions, value, norm and social issues. The students can ask questions, differentiate different points of view and reflect their cultural experiences. The studies also indicated that deep learning has significant roles in strengthening the learning process. The elements like character, collaboration and creativity can help students connect with contextual learning. As a result, the students become more active, reflective and have strong cultural awareness. However, this study finds some challenges particularly the weakness of teacher professional training, limitation of learning resources and uneven availabilty of cultural textbook. Even though there were some limitations, the studies reveal that the integrations of local literature and deep learning show strong potential to improve literacy learning and make it more relevant and meaningful for students.
