Abstract

This article aims to examine the pilgrimage to Mbah Priok’s grave from social, economic, and religious perspectives. This qualitative research employs a combination of literature review, historical analysis, and anthropological methods. The study reveals that the Tomb of Mbah Priok, also known as Habib Hasan Al Hadad, serves as a significant pilgrimage site despite historical controversies. The Al Hadad family has maintained religious authority and withstood temporal challenges. Notably, in April 2010, the Al Hadad family engaged in a physical and administrative conflict with a company expanding the area. During Governor Ahok’s tenure, the tomb was designated a religious tourism site and cultural heritage, fostering economic growth for local businesses and the surrounding community. This research contributes to understanding the socio-economic and religious dynamics of pilgrimage sites, highlighting the complex interplay between tradition and modernity

Abstract

The development of digital technology and social media has transformed the landscape of religious practices, particularly in the context of Popular Islam in Indonesia. This article examines the representation of Popular Islam through Sufi expressions on the Instagram account _zukkk, focusing on how visually Sufi-inspired representations convey messages of tolerance and religious inclusivity in the digital space. Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach is used to analyze the visual meanings in these digital artworks, while Stuart Hall’s theory of representation is applied to understand how these meanings are constructed and negotiated within social and media contexts. The analysis shows that the Sufi expressions on _zukkk are not merely artistic works, but a social construction that emphasizes the values of moderation and openness in Popular Islam. Sufism, as the spiritual foundation of this expression, also helps shape an inclusive and tolerant view of religion, engaging in interfaith dialogue amidst the dominant narratives of conservative and digital religiosity. This study also highlights the important role of social media as a space for negotiating meaning, where visual representation becomes an effective medium for spreading spiritual and social messages. This research contributes to the study of Popular Islam and digital media by presenting Sufism as an inclusive discourse that is visually represented and socially produced within the digital realm. These findings encourage a new understanding of the relationship between art, spirituality, and religious tolerance in the complex and diverse virtual world.

Abstract

This article examines Agus Sunyoto’s ideas on the distinctiveness of Nusantara Islamic education as articulated through the Pramistara (Pesantren Ramadhan Islam Nusantara) program, which emerges as a response to the challenges of globalization and the Industrial Revolution 4.0. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach through literature review and narrative analysis of Pramistara’s texts, lectures, and documents, this study applies Michel Foucault’s archaeology of knowledge to trace how Sunyoto constructs the discourse of Nusantara Islam across historical, epistemological, and power-related layers that legitimize Pramistara as a continuation of the archipelagic Islamic tradition. In addition, Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy is used to examine how Pramistara’s educational practices foster dialogical learning, critical consciousness, and socio-spiritual awareness in addressing contemporary issues. The findings indicate that Pramistara is not merely a Ramadan study forum, but a strategic educational space that integrates pesantren traditions, Indonesian historical narratives, Sufism, and global issues such as geopolitics, proxy wars, and cryptocurrency. Through this integrative approach, Agus Sunyoto positions Nusantara Islamic education as a model that balances intellectual rigor with spiritual transformation, while simultaneously reinforcing local identity in the face of global secularizing forces. Foucault’s framework elucidates the knowledge structures that underpin the discourse of Nusantara Islam, whereas Freire’s theory underscores Pramistara’s role in cultivating critical, reflective, and moderate learners. Consequently, Pramistara emerges as an alternative educational model that sustains continuity with tradition while equipping the younger generation to navigate the challenges of a disruptive era.
