Abstract

This year’s Presidential and Vice-Presidential election is a political power struggle that will determine the future of the Indonesian nation. This qualitative research aims to assess electoral politics, specifically the electability of each candidate pair based on key political elements. The research method used is a literature review, with secondary data obtained from journal articles, books, and online sources. The results of the study indicate that trends in candidate electability can be measured through the harmonization of political survey results and the configuration of each candidate’s electability. The candidate pairs incorporate political elements such as identity politics, political blunders, work programs, elite or key actors, public gimmicks and sensationalism, and political maneuvers, as seen in the campaigns of Anies-Muhaimin, Prabowo-Gibran, and Ganjar-Mahfud. These political elements, which have long existed in Indonesia’s political arena (conventional elements), often dramatically shift the electoral strength of each camp. The candidates must manage these political elements to their electoral advantage if they wish to increase their electability and win the election. This study examines the strategy of capitalizing on voter behavior in the 2024 Presidential Election.

Abstract

The city is a complex reality that reflects the struggle for political, economic, and cultural spaces and resources amidst limitations and contingencies in achieving justice for all city residents. The concepts of the Right to the City and Urban Social Movements, as explored in urban political literature, serve as an exploratory framework for this qualitative-descriptive research. They help to understand the struggles for the right to the city through urban social movements in Karet Tengsin and Kampung Guji Baru, Jakarta. This study employs both primary and secondary data collection methods. Primary data were gathered through interviews with three key informants: two activists from Tim 9 in Karet Tengsin and one activist from Serikat Perjuangan Rakyat Indonesia (SPRI) in Kampung Guji Baru. These interviews were further supported by direct observation conducted over approximately one month in both areas. Secondary data, including literature from books, scientific journals, and media reports, complement the analysis and provide insights into the empirical realities of urban social movements by slum residents in Jakarta. The findings demonstrate distinct differences in the models, types, and demands of struggles for the right to the city as exhibited by Tim 9 in Karet Tengsin and SPRI in Kampung Guji Baru. Moreover, the empirical evidence descriptively concludes that the Jakarta government has yet to fully realize the right to the city, particularly in providing access to adequate housing and sustainable livelihoods (collective consumption).

Abstract

This study aims to explain bureaucracy or public administration in Thailand as a system and organisation of public services and state policy implementation that is connected to various aspects: socio-cultural, legal, and political, especially in transformation efforts to improve public service performance. The data collection method for this study is a systematic literature review of books, journal articles, reports, and other sources over the past 10 years, classified into aspects of culture, politics, barriers and drivers of transformation, and law within Thailand's bureaucracy. Using the Public Administration Culture theoretical framework formulated by Guy Peters (2001) in his book The Politics of Bureaucracy, this research focuses on answering how Buddhist social culture, legal politics, and internal bureaucratic culture mutually influence bureaucratic transformation in Thailand? This study found that social culture, which is related to the social system, public participation, and Buddhism, as well as the legal framework, are social forces that construct the behaviour patterns and services of bureaucrats as part of Thai society. Similarly, political culture, which is related to power politics (the king, military, executive, and others) and the patterns of relationships between politicians and bureaucrats in both law and practice, also plays a role. In line with this, public administration culture also involves patrimonialism and clientelism practised in inter-bureaucratic relations as part of Thailand's broader political and public service system. In conclusion, bureaucracy in Thailand is a complex public service organisational system where its transformation efforts are shaped or influenced by multi-faceted interactions between socio-cultural, political, legal, and internal administrative factors.
