Abstract

This study explores the driving factors behind EFL students' reading difficulties and the coping strategies employed by teachers. Previous studies about similar research mostly conducted overseas. This indicated a lack of attention to students’ English reading skills in Indonesia. Several consequences can occur if English teachers in Indonesia are unaware of the importance of students English reading skills learning. These include inadequate preparation, limited vocabulary growth, poor comprehension skills, reduced motivation, and missed opportunities (Nanda, 2020). This research conducted at an Islamic senior high school in Jember, East Java, Indonesia, the research utilizes a qualitative case study design to delve into teachers' perceptions. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with a female EFL teacher. The findings identify key obstacles, including limited vocabulary, restricted exposure to the target language, and insufficient practice opportunities. To address these issues, teachers use strategies such as teaching the alphabetic principle, phonemic awareness exercises, vocabulary-building activities, and providing additional reading materials. The study highlights the importance of targeted interventions focusing on vocabulary and practice to enhance reading proficiency. However, limitations include the small sample size and reliance on self-reported data. Future research should involve larger, more diverse samples to validate these findings. This research offers valuable insights into EFL challenges and suggests practical solutions for improving reading instruction, thereby supporting students' academic and personal success.

Abstract

Abstract: The implementation of character education is a path to building a more moral education. This research aims to describe the teacher's perception of the implementation of character education at SD YAPITA Surabaya. This research uses a descriptive qualitative design with one class IV teacher as a participant, who was selected through purposive techniques with the criteria of having at least two years of teaching experience, directly involved in learning and familiarization activities, and willing to provide in-depth information. Data was collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify the meaning patterns of participants' answers. The research results found three main themes, namely: (1) teacher habituation and familiarity as the basis for character formation; (2) integration of character values in learning and school culture; and (3) implementation challenges, including the influence of the external environment, low parental involvement, and limited time and facilities. This finding shows that character education in YAPITA Elementary School is applied through school routines, integration of grades in subjects, as well as activities that support character internalization such as discipline, responsibility, empathy, and cooperation. This research makes an important contribution by emphasizing that teacher perception plays a central role in the success of character education, especially in Islamic-based elementary schools. The research implications emphasize the need for collaboration between schools, parents, and the community as well as the improvement of teacher competence to strengthen the sustainability of character education programs.
