Abstract

The expansion of oil palm plantation has drawn scholarship attention. On one hand, studies have examined how oil palm plantation development serves an important instrument for employment creation, poverty alleviation and rural development. On the other, there is plenty of research that shows adverse impacts of such expansion on socio-ecological conditions. This includes the recruitment of women plantation workers into maintenance work with flexible labour relations. Meanwhile, literature on oil palm plantations in Indonesia has not paid significant attention on care work. Employing feminist political economy perspective, this article attempts to understand care work in monoculture oil palm plantations, particularly in relations to maintenance work on plantation. Through the concept of social reproduction, care work is understood in a broader terms as a way to draw the entanglement between production and reproduction in monoculture oil palm plantations. This article argues that women workers participation into maintenance work on plantations show the articulation of social relations based on patriarchal system with palm oil competition in the global market. From the perspective of the women workers, participation in the maintenance work is viewed as a livelihood strategy. The strategy that involves works with risk of regular exposure to toxic chemicals is understood as toxic care.

Abstract

This research examines the themes of women's digital literacy within the evolving digital economy. Digital literacy includes the ability to operate technological devices, critical understanding on information, and the use digital media safely and effectively. The literacy is one of the crucial keys to succeed in the competitive market, particularly for online women workers. This literature study employs descriptive analysis from a feminist political economy perspective that analyzes how power relations, social structures, and the economy shape gender inequality in the context of work and technology. This analysis explores the technology gap among women online workers, focusing on challenges, opportunities, and skills gaps. The findings indicate that in the era of the digital economy, technological proficiency is one of the keys to enhance women's livelihood. Nevertheless, women tend to possess lower technological skills than men. Several factors contribute to this gap, including socio-cultural structures, gender-biased technology, and limited access to education. It is essential to implement appropriate policies and initiatives to improve women's digital literacy, so, we can empower women to compete in the digital economy.

Abstract

Resilience has emerged as a central theme in urban planning, offering a strategic framework to manage city development while promoting sustainability. This is particularly important for Jakarta as it ranks among the world's significant cities highly susceptible to diverse challenges and disruptions. This includes vulnerability to drug crime cases. As one of the efforts to overcome vulnerability, it is necessary to analyze drug-prone areas in Jakarta based on urban villages. The purpose of this study is to analyze the spatial distribution of drug-prone areas in Jakarta using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and to analyze the role of factors determining the level of drug-prone areas in Jakarta province by applying an ordinal logit regression model. The results of this research show that almost all independent variables have no significant impact on the level of drug-prone areas. The result shows that the presence of foreigners has a significant impact on the level drug prone areas. The research findings recommend tighter monitoring of the presence of foreigners.

Abstract

AbstractThis study attempts to answer the question of why the programs provided by the government for post-migrant women after they have completed migration (post-migration) seem to be lip service. Rather than empowering and providing protection from various vulnerabilities, the empowerment framework with such characteristics actually burdens women. This study uses a qualitative method with a feminist perspective. The case study approach was chosen in this study in order to illustrate the problem. The case study was taken from the experience in Krasak Village, Indramayu Regency. In looking at the problem of the reduction of empowerment programs for women-returnee, this paper uses the capability perspective of Martha Nussbaum and the intersectionality framework of Patricia Hill Collins. Based on the perspective of capability theory, empowerment should also aim to achieve equality, including targeting the gap in opportunities that are rooted deep in their life cycle in the past. The absence of social support and an enabling environment for a person's growth and development is also recognized as the issue of social inequality that needs to be targeted, in order to achieve equality of conditions for returnee. Meanwhile, based on the intersectionality framework, this study reveals the incompleteness of the approach used in the entrepreneurship program. It has ignored the various vulnerabilities experienced by returnee, which occur as a result of the interaction of several intertwined power systems (gender, class, and development inequality in the areas of origin of returnees) Keywords: Emancipatory empowerment; Women-migrant-returnees; Post-migration vulnerability; Women’s capability gap.

Abstract

This article examines women’s collective action against land grabbing on Pari Island, Jakarta Bay, through the framework of Feminist Political Ecology (FPE). Land grabbing in Indonesia’s coastal areas often marginalises local communities, with women disproportionately affected due to their reliance on land and marine resources for subsistence and livelihoods. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research draws on in-depth interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) with four women from the Women’s Group in Pari Island. The findings show that women’s struggles extended beyond direct protest to include the development of gendered ecological knowledge—such as vegetable gardening and mangrove planting—and grassroots activism through arisan, beach management, and solidarity networks. These are transforming everyday ecological labour into claims over space, rights, and justice. Despite persistent challenges—restrictive gender norms, criminalisation, stigma, and the lack of generational succession—women secured small but significant victories. These included the Ombudsman’s recognition of maladministration, political support from the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, and local economic strengthening through community-based tourism. The study emphasises the importance of integrating gender perspectives into the analysis of coastal land conflicts and calls for greater institutional support for women’s leadership, education, and advocacy in sustainable resource governance.

Abstract

The capitalist patriarchal system materializes in every aspect of life, even in the workplace, resulting in men and women's alienation. Unlike previous studies on women's alienation, this article examines the alienation of women as main breadwinners in a financial sector. Through film analysis, this article discusses the movie Fair Play released by Netflix in 2023. The movie focuses on a woman named Emily who gets a higher position than her fiancé in a securities company, causing jealousy. The movie Fair Play tries to distort the reality of how women are able to get higher positions in a male-dominated system. Drawing on Alison Jaggar's alienation theory, this article attempts to show how the form of alienation experienced by Emily as a woman is different from the alienation experienced by men in a capitalist patriarchal system. Using qualitative method in analyzing Fair Play movie scenes, the study reveals that alienation experienced by workers, whether female or male, is the result of an exploitative capitalist system. The article also argues that Emily experiences alienation of sexuality and intellectuality because of her femininity. This implies that women experience double standards because of the double burden caused by gender roles. It concludes that women experience alienation differently from men because of their gender. By eliminating of the concepts of masculinity and femininity, this alienation experienced differently by women can be overcome.
