This includes identifying and leveraging the potential of the plantation crop subsector to create competitive, high-value agricultural activities that can increase regional income. Purpose: This study aims to identify the key commodities and areas within each plantation crop subsector in Meranti Islands Regency, Riau Province. Design/methodology/approach: It utilizes five years of production data (2017-2021) from the Central Bureau of Statistics of Meranti Islands Regency. Analytical methods used to identify the superior products of plantation crops include the Sectoral Contribution Index (IKS), Growth Ratio Model (MRP), Location Quotient (LQ), Dynamic Location Quotient (DLQ), Composite Index (IK) and Hot Spot (Getis-Ord Gi*). Findings/Result: The results indicate that the leading plantation crop commodities in Meranti Islands Regency are sago, coconut, coffee, and areca nut. These commodities are identified as the most promising based on their contribution, growth rate, production capacity to meet regional needs, export potential, and future prospects. The flagship areas are Tebing Tinggi Timur District for sago, Rangsang District for coconut, Rangsang Pesisir District for coffee, and Rangsang Barat District for areca nut. Thus, the government must make a plan for the development of plantations with the potential of each region that can improve the economy of the region. Conclusion: The government must make a plan for the development of plantations with the potential of each region that can improve the economy of the region.Originality/value (State of the art): This study uses GIS for spatial analysis and mapping of land potential based on factors such as soil fertility, rainfall, and topography. Abstract

Sago is a typical Southeast Asian plant that is often found in water areas such as Meranti Regency. Even though Meranti Islands Regency in Sumatra is the largest center for sago growth, public consumption of sago is not yet in line with the high potential of this plant as a source of carbohydrates. In facing population growth and increasing food needs, sago has become a strategic commodity to maintain food security. This research uses dynamic modeling with Powersim Studio 7 to simulate planning scenarios to ensure the availability of sago in the future. Simulations show that Meranti Islands Regency can achieve the target of sago plantation area in 2032 with an accelerated growth policy, producing 3,915,168.71 tons of sago rice in 2040 and 499,182.72 tons in 2022.

Abstract

Abstract

Sustainable economic growth is an absolute requirement for the economic development of a region, both on a regional and national scale. The government should develop sectors that are capable of providing a multiplier on other sectors. This is also very much needed by the Province of Riau. This study aims to identify and analyze the leading sectors that have competitive competitiveness and to determine the priority of the base sector as information material and considerations especially for the Provincial Government of Riau in the development of economic development in the future. This study uses secondary data in the form of Riau Province sectoral GDP and Indonesia's sectoral GDP based on constant 2010 prices. The type of data collected is in the form of a time series from 2015 to 2021 obtained from the Central Bureau of Statistics of Riau Province and the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics. The data is then analyzed with a quantitative descriptive approach using the Location Quotient (LQ). Based on the LQ method, there are 3 leading sectors in Riau Province, namely Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Mining and Quarrying and Processing Industry. The three sectors have an LQ above 1, which means that these sectors are the base sectors. The three PDRB sectors from 2015–2021 have continued to increase except for the mining and quarrying sector which has continued to decline every year but is still the basis sector for economic growth in Riau.

Abstract

The phenomenon of fluctuations in Indonesian coffee exports to Japan shows complex dynamics influenced by various external and internal factors. This study aims to analyze the effect of world coffee prices, climate conditions, and trade promotion on the volume of Indonesian coffee exports to Japan. The method used is multiple regression analysis with a time series approach using data from 1989 to 2024. The results show that simultaneously, all independent variables—world coffee prices, air temperature, rainfall, exchange rate volatility, and trade promotion dummy—have a significant effect on export volume. Partially, world coffee prices have a significant positive effect, while air temperature and trade promotion dummy have a significant negative effect. Rainfall and exchange rate volatility have no significant effect.

Abstract

This study analyzes the projections of coffee production, area, and consumption in Indonesia in the period 2022–2026 to identify opportunities and challenges in the sustainability of the national coffee sector. A descriptive qualitative approach is employed, using secondary data processed through multiple regression methods and ARIMA models for trend estimation. Secondary data were processed using multiple regression methods and ARIMA models for trend estimation. The results of the analysis show that coffee production tends to be stagnant with an average of 790,103 tons per year, experiencing an average annual decline of 0.12%. Meanwhile, the coffee area shows an average positive growth trend of 0.66% per year, reaching 1,296,254 hectares in 2026. Domestic consumption decreased by an average of 1.19% per year, from 379,655 tons in 2022 to 361,837 tons in 2026. Net coffee exports actually increased consistently by an average of 0.83% per year. This study concludes the need to increase productivity and diversify the domestic market to maintain the sustainability of the coffee sector, amid increasing exports and changing consumption trends. The need for strategies to address declining domestic consumption and stagnating production trends, despite positive growth in coffee cultivation areas and net exports. It emphasizes recommendations such as adopting sustainable farming practices, increasing productivity through technological innovation, and diversifying coffee products to cater to both domestic and international markets. Additionally, it suggests strengthening Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global coffee market by investing in branding, marketing, and value-added products.
