Abstract

The people of Tulungrejo Village believe that they are not allowed to inviting wayang and hanging the gong because this can bring disaster. The purpose of this research is to understand the reason why people still maintain these myts and to find out how people interpret the wxistence of these myths. The theory used is theory of semiotics from Charles Pierce and structural theory from Lévi-Strauss to find out the meaning of the myth of the prohibition of inviting wayang and hanging gongs in the life of the people of Tulungrejo Village. This study used a qualitative research method with an ethnographic research model through observation, interview techniques and literature study. Based on the results of the research that has been done, there are reasons why people still believe in and maintain the myth of the prohibition of inviting wayang and hanging gongs because hese myths useful values and functions for the people of Tulungrejo Village: 1) as acommunity effort to avoid unwanted disaster, 2) as a means of delivering ethics education messages, and 3) as a medium for sreading Islam.

Abstract

Ende are one of the merchant communities in Sotor Market, Ketang Village, Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province. In everyday life Ende has a dual role, namely a domestic role and a public role. The involvement of women in the public sphere aims to help husbands increase economic family. So on this basis the research was conducted to find out how the role of women traders in the domestic sphere and in the public sphere. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with an ethnographic research model through observation, interviews, and literature studies. The theory used is Role theory (Pujiwati Sajogyo) and Socialist Feminism theory (Friederich Engels). Based on the results of the research analysis, Ende's role in the domestic sphere is to act as a wife to her husband, a mother to her children, and a grandmother to her grandchildren. While in the public sphere Ende acts as a breadwinner and as a member of the community. Women traders by carrying out these two dual roles have implications for both the family and the community.

Abstract

The Toraja people have a death ceremony which is usually called the rambu solo’. In carrying out the rambu solo’ ceremony, there is a process of buffalo sacrifice which is commonly called mantunu tedong. But now mantunu tedong have changed its meaning where formerly the tedong/buffalo that was sacrificed would be used as a vehicle and provision for the deceased to get to the spirit realm but now its become a place to show off wealth. This study aims to determine the function and meaning of mantunu tedong in rambu solo’ ceremony for the people of Salu Baruppu Village, North Toraja. This study uses qualitative methods, using interpretive theory and religious functions. Mantunu tedong for the people of Salu Baruppu Village, North Toraja has several functions, namely as a symbol of wealth and one's position in society and as a benchmark in carrying out the rambu solo’ ceremony, as well as strengthening kinship relations in society. Mantunu tedong is interpreted as a form of gratitude and final respect for those who have died.

Abstract

Every region in Indonesia has cultural characteristics that are visible and manifested in one of them in form of traditional house architecture. The house is one of earliest forms of human knowledge which is only used as a place, shelter, protection from threats from natural environment or made according to their needs. As human experience and knowledge increases, both external and internal influences change little by little the initial form of traditional house. The main objective of this article is to understand the transformation of traditional mbaru gendang house in Ruteng Pu'u Village, the next objective is to understand the function of mbaru gendang in Ruteng Pu'u community. The method in this research is based on ethnographic principles, through interviews with traditional elders of Ruteng Pu'u Village, observation, literature study, and analyzing data obtained from the research field. The results research show that initially mbaru gendang did not have walls and windows and kitchen was still one with mbaru gendang. Currently mbaru gendang has walls and windows, as well as a separate kitchen from mbaru gendang. For Ruteng Pu'u community, this change does not eliminate identity of mbaru gendang as traditional house of people of Ruteng Pu'u. The function of mbaru gendang is still same as original function of mbaru gendang, namely mbaru gendang remains center for carrying out ceremonies, traditional assemblies, deliberations, and social orders.
