Abstract

ESPOCH, an Ecuadorian university with a unique underground water source, is developing a drinking water plant to serve its population of over 22,000 students and staff members. The paper explores innovative measures and technology for efficient water utilization at ESPOCH, including a secondary, untreated water line for non-potable uses and the adoption of smart water management technologies to monitor and regulate water consumption. This approach addresses the provision of safe drinking water, plastic waste reduction, and health risks linked to poor water quality. ESPOCH's innovative water management approach contributes to the broader discussion on sustainable universities' role in managing water resources. The study highlights the importance of technology and innovation in resource conservation and utilization in higher education institutions, with ESPOCH serving as a valuable example for other universities addressing water scarcity, environmental impact, and promoting sustainable practices.

Abstract

Abstract

The university action to the issues that came along with COVID-19 needed to embrace the whole management system for facing the challenges related to infrastructure, water, waste management, transport, and education. Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo (ESPOCH) has focused most of its efforts into building and maintaining its infrastructure. The linkage to society has become of paramount importance for ESPOCH, during this time, the university becoming the first and biggest vaccination site in the city. Moreover, several conferences related to training and business ideas for entrepreneurs have been launched, always keeping sustainability in mind. Universal access for people with disabilities and the use of efficient lightning is a common characteristic of all the new buildings; the residues are technically disposed of having managed 4413 m3 of them during 2020. The same technical disposal of residues is applied for recyclable, biodegradable, dangerous and inert ones. Additionally, the campus green areas have been maintained and forested using native species planting about 500 new trees during the last year. The opportunities brought by the pandemic have been harnessed to strengthen the setting and infrastructure of ESPOCH while at the same time serving the surrounding community.Keyword: university management, COVID-19, Latin America, sustainability, higher education.

Abstract

Although sustainable development focuses on continuing the progress of societies without putting future resources and the environment at risk, new technologies, political treaties and economic initiatives are not enough. In this context, the role of universities is fundamental in the formation of leaders that allow raising awareness in society, and in the implementation of pilot projects that can be quickly adjusted and scaled. ESPOCH forms sustainability competencies with a formal focus, by including courses in environmental sustainability within all study curricula, as well as with a non-formal focus through extracurricular activities such as tree planting, avoiding the use of private vehicles, among others. Regarding management, projects such as the replacement of campus luminaires with high-efficiency LED lights, reducing energy consumption from 69 kWh-day to 11.5 KWh-day and the construction of intelligent buildings that will allow efficient management of resources and spaces are being carried out. The feedback obtained from ESPOCH’s participation in UI GreenMetric World University Rankings has allowed the university leaders, professors and students to identify the sectors that should be addressed as a priority and propose solutions to them considering sustainable development approaches.
