Abstract

Spiny lobster, a fishery commodity with important economic value, is often infested by Octolasmis sp. on their bodies, which causes stress conditions that lead to death. This study aimed to determine the anatomical pathology and hemolymph profile of spiny lobster infested with Octolasmis sp. in bottom cages. The method used was an observation, where 30 lobsters (weight 112.44 ± 24.63 g) were carried out in June–July 2022 at the Pesona Bahari Wongsorejo, Banyuwangi. Hemolymph profile and anatomical pathology data were analyzed, respectively, using the Independent T-Test and Kruskal-Wallis test (α = 95%). The results based on scoring data showed a very significant difference between infected and healthy lobsters (p < 0.01), characterized by the occurrence of tail flakes, lesions on the carapace, gill melanization, and the appearance of ulcers on the ventral abdomen. A very significant change occurred in the hemolymph profile of infected lobsters compared to healthy lobsters (p < 0.01). Total hemocyte count increased with high concentrations of granular cells, respectively 22.1–37.8 ´x 106 cells/mL and 63.75–64.5%, along with lobster damage, while hyaline cells decreased. This study showed that there was a change in anatomic pathology and hemolymph profile between infected and healthy lobsters.

Abstract

The demand for common carp in Indonesia is high, and the success of seed production relies on the quality of the broodstock. However, freshwater aquaculture faces challenges from diseases, particularly parasites like Argulus japonicus. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, intensity, and degree of infestation of A. japonicus on common carp. The research method was survey. The research was conducted in October 2019 at Ngawi Fish Hatchery Center and in November 2023 at Tambakrejo Village, Waru, Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia. There were 26 broodstock of common carp as samples. A. japonicus were ectoparasites found to infest 10 common carp (Cyprinus carpio) broodstock that were ready to spawn at Fish Hatchery Center in Ngawi, East Java and 16 common carp (C. carpio) that raised from Tambakrejo Village farmer in Waru, Sidoarjo, East Java. Prevalence of the fish infested with A. japonicus was same in 100% at both regions. However, there is different in the intensity of A. japonicus at Ngawi Fish Hatchery Center (29 individuals/head) and at Tambakrejo Village, Waru, Sidoarjo (42,5 individuals/head). But, the degree of infestation in both location was classified as severe. Attachment site of A. japonicus were in the fish body surface, fins, and mouth. During the research, water quality is in normal limits that can be observed by 28°C temperature, 7.1 pH, and 2.6 mg/L DO. In conclusion, common carp in Ngawi Fish Hatchery Center and Tambakrejo Village, Waru, Sidoarjo, East Java, were infested with the heavy category of A. japonicus.

Abstract

The blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus) is a high economic importance marine species and serves as a primary target for local fisheries employing collapsible traps in Gebang Mekar, Cirebon Regency waters. This study aimed to examine the sex ratio and growth pattern based on variations in carapace width and body weight of crabs captured in the area. Fieldwork was conducted from April to May 2023 in Gebang Mekar Village. Data collection involved measuring the carapace width and body weight of crabs obtained from 30 fishing trips. A total of 2,191 individuals were recorded, comprising 638 males (29.2%) and 1,553 females (70.8%), resulting in a male-to-female ratio of 1:2.4. Carapace width ranged from 6 to 16 cm, while body weight varied between 21 to 338 grams. The analysis of the width-weight relationship yielded a regression coefficient (b) of 2.923, indicating a negative allometric growth pattern, where carapace width increases faster than body weight. The results also demonstrated a positive correlation between carapace width and body weight, suggesting that larger individuals tend to be heavier. Key words: blue swimming crab, carapace width and weight, sex ratio
