Abstract

This study is a class action research study which is aimed to find out how the competition in classroom activities in relation with communicative competence can be conducted properly. Communicative competence as the ability to utilize both knowledge and skills of a language to communicate appropriately by involving social and cultural context is an essential competence which should be mastered by English learners, especially in college level. Mastering communicative competence means having capacity in four areas of the competence namely grammatical competence, sociolinguistics competence, discourse competence and strategic competence. In achieving this goal of learning, the synergy among strategy, method and learning instruments is a must. The synergy of the mentioned parts of teaching and learning activity then should be presented in effective classroom activities. Classroom activities should be designed to encourage students to perform their communicative competence. Collaborating students and teachers’ roles to trigger students’ motivation to develop themselves by competing in healthy environment is a movement to help students enhancing their communicative competence. The researchers use qualitative approach. The result shows that healthy competition can elevate students’ communicative competence.

Abstract

Salah satu cara untuk menjaga kondusivitas lingkungan akademis adalah dengan menyediakan akses yang cukup terhadap bahan bacaan untuk siswa. Bukan hanya buku yang menjadi sumber utama bacaan, majalah dinding sekolah pun dapat dimanfaatkan untuk hal tersebut. Masalah yang muncul di pengelolaan majalah dinding adalah konsistensi penerbitannya. Hal inilah yang terjadi di MA Daarul Hikmah Pamulang. Dari pihak pengelola mengungkapkan bahwa mereka kesulitan untuk menemukan ide terkait materi yang ada di majalah dinding. Tim PKM Prodi Sastra Inggris Universitas Pamulang melihat hal tersebut sebagai persoalan yang harus diselesaikan. Oleh karena itu, tim PKM melakukan kegiatan pengabdian dengan tema menghidupkan semangat literasi sekolah melalui majalah dinding. Melalui media film yang berjudul The Book Thief, tim PKM memberikan pemahaman dan wawasan terkait ide untuk materi di majalah dinding. Di dalam film terdapat banyak kutipan yang bisa dijadikan ide untuk majalah dinding. Dengan mengutip kalimat atau frasa di dalam film, siswa-siswa mendapat pengetahuan untuk keberlangsungan majalah dinding di sekolah. Hasilnya, konten majalah dinding di MA Daarul Hikmah Pamulang terisi kembali.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan di Madrasah Aliyah Daarul Hikmah Pamulang dengan tema "Pengembangan Literasi melalui Cipta Puisi". Program ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan literasi siswa kelas XI melalui kegiatan penulisan puisi sebagai sarana ekspresi diri yang kreatif dan positif. Kegiatan ini melibatkan dosen Sastra Inggris Universitas Pamulang yang memberikan pelatihan dan pendampingan langsung kepada siswa dalam mencipta puisi. Hasil dari pengabdian ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa mampu mengekspresikan perasaan, ide, dan pengalaman mereka melalui puisi dengan lebih baik. Selain itu, siswa juga menunjukkan peningkatan antusiasme dan kreativitas dalam mengolah bahasa, serta kemampuan untuk menyusun kata-kata yang bermakna dan terstruktur. Diharapkan, kegiatan ini dapat menjadi alternatif bagi siswa untuk lebih fokus mengekspresikan diri melalui karya sastra, dibandingkan dengan media sosial atau hal-hal lain yang kurang memberikan dampak positif. Program ini juga memberikan kontribusi dalam meningkatkan kemampuan literasi siswa secara keseluruhan, terutama dalam membaca, menulis, dan memahami makna dalam karya sastra. Melalui pengembangan literasi melalui cipta puisi, diharapkan siswa dapat lebih kritis dan kreatif dalam menggunakan bahasa, serta dapat menyalurkan perasaan dan ide mereka dengan cara yang lebih konstruktif dan mendidik.

Abstract

This study explores the relationship between students' communicative competence and the use of digital media, specifically YouTube, in English language learning. The research focuses on college students majoring in English Literature at Pamulang University, with a focus on third-semester students in the Academic Presentation course. English language learning strategies are influenced by various factors such as motivation, environment, and personality, with communicative competence being a critical factor in students' ability to effectively use English in social contexts. The study investigates how the use of digital media, including YouTube, enhances students' communicative skills by providing a platform for performance evaluation and global exposure. Students who engage with digital media find that it boosts their confidence and responsibility, as their presentations can be viewed by a wider audience, encouraging them to refine their language skills. Qualitative research, including pre-tests, interviews, and observations, reveals a notable improvement in students' presentation skills when compared to offline performances. The findings suggest that digital media not only supports language acquisition but also promotes the development of communication, critical thinking, and cultural awareness. Ultimately, this study emphasizes the importance of integrating digital media into language learning to foster communicative competence and enhance overall academic performance.

Abstract

Essay writing is a skill that must be mastered by students, especially English Literature Study Program students. Writing essays in English is a challenge in itself which of course has a lot of problems in the process. In writing essays in English, of course, you have to follow the correct writing rules. Mastery of several important aspects of writing including grammar, vocabulary, content, mechanism and organization is very important to be able to create good and easy-to-understand writing. Besides that. there are several things that need to be considered to create accuracy in writing such as sentence structure, cohesive devices in writing, and so on. In this study, the focus is on the problem of writing sentences. This study investigates sentence writing problems such as sentence fragments, run-on sentences, parallel structures, comma connections, and so on which are often encountered. This study involved semester student essays 6 English Literature study programs. The reason for selecting sixth semester students for the English Literature study program is because at this level students have already taken Writing and Grammar courses. This study aims to explain the phenomena of the sentence problems. This research is expected to contribute to the academic field. The contribution in question is a contribution in improving learning strategies related to writing. Therefore the author chose the research title "Sentence Problem in essay writing for students of the English Literature study program, Pamulang University".

Abstract

English as a second or foreign language, it is often found that learning English is not an easy task, In order to overcome that difficulty, there are many factors that can be counted in, including learning strategies. Learning strategies are considered as self-improvement devices that might be driven by learners themselves or by teachers. In addition, culture might play important role in determining learning strategy since culture cannot be separated from language as well as its learning/teaching. This paper attempts to provide a learning strategy that might meet with Indonesian students’ cultural background. As noticed, Indonesians commonly hold mutual assistance as one of life principles. Hence, this paper also provides an explanation concerning learning strategy which may meet with mutual assistance principle: collaborative learning.

Abstract

This research explains the biracial identity experiences by individuals. By analyzing “I am not Your Perfect Mexican Doughter” by Erika L Sanchez novel, the study aims to explore the biracial identity issue and how to deal with it so that it can be related to the real-life issues related to racial identity. Furthermore, this study reveals how the response given by the main character to negotiate the identity. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method because it enables the writer to describe the result holistically. Moreover, the data were collected to analyze the study in detail within the novel’s narrative. After gathering the data, they were analyzed using Stella Ting-Toomey and Tenzin Dorjee identity theory to demonstrate that the novel’s narrative relates to biracial identity experiences. The results of the study show a connection between biracial identity experiences and the response of the main character. Moreover, the findings show that the biracial experiences and struggles of identity in this novel are explained as having the potential of affect individual process of negotiating identity, both personally and socially.
