Abstract

Healthy children are in perfect condition both physically, mentally/psychologically and socially (free from disease, weakness and disability). In order for children to grow and develop optimally, children must also be accustomed to healthy living behavior and the Childhood Phase is the developmental phase from the age of 1 or 2 years to 10-12 years, this phase is further classified into two, namely early childhood (small children) between 1-6 years, and later childhood (big children) between 6-12 years. According to the Ministry of Education and Culture, reading mastery is not mandatory for PAUD age children (3-5 years) because this skill will only be taught formally at elementary school level. Children should actually start being taught to read maximally at the age of 4-6 years. Because, this is a golden period for the cognitive development of the brain. In other words, they can absorb lessons and imitate quickly. Brain gym or brain exercise is a touch that can stimulate the work and functioning of the brain optimally, namely further activating the abilities of the right and left brain, so that cooperation between the right and left brain hemispheres can be established. This can improve memory in the child's brain to learn to read.

Abstract

This Community Service aims to introduce English to toddlers at Fina Sembiring Clinic, Medan Polonia District, through a play-based learning approach in 2024. The program utilizes interactive teaching methods that combine educational games, children's songs, and picture stories to create a fun and effective learning environment for the children. By using this strategy, it is expected that children can develop basic English skills, such as vocabulary, pronunciation, and basic comprehension through age-appropriate activities. Active parental participation is also a focus of this program, providing guidelines and brief training to help them continue practicing English at home. The effectiveness of the program is evaluated through direct observation, interviews with parents, and language development tests specifically designed for toddlers. The results of this activity show that the play-based learning approach can increase children's interest and basic English skills. Moreover, active parental involvement proves crucial in supporting the success of this program. In conclusion, this approach not only improves toddlers' English skills but also creates a positive bond between children and parents in the learning process.

Abstract

Active Cycle Breathing Exercise (ACBE) is an effective therapeutic method for managing asthma symptoms, particularly in improving lung function and reducing the frequency of attacks. The role of physiotherapists as parental companions in implementing ACBE is crucial, especially at Medan Selayang Community Health Center. This study aims to analyze the contribution of physiotherapists in assisting parents of children with asthma to perform ACBE correctly and consistently. A descriptive research method was used, collecting data through interviews, observations, and questionnaires administered to parents and physiotherapists. The results indicate that physiotherapist involvement not only enhances parents' understanding of ACBE techniques but also improves adherence to regular practice at home. Furthermore, there was a significant reduction in asthma symptoms among children following consistent therapy. The physiotherapists' roles include education, demonstration, supervision, and evaluation of patient progress. Through this assistance, parents gain confidence in helping their children manage asthma, leading to an overall improvement in the quality of life for both children and families. This study recommends strengthening training programs for parents and integrating ACBE into physiotherapy services at the community health center level to ensure sustainable therapy.

Abstract

Low back pain (LBP) is a common health issue that affects both adolescents and the elderly, impacting their daily activities and overall quality of life. This study aims to identify the causes, risk factors, and preventive measures associated with LBP in these two age groups. Various factors, including posture, physical activity, body weight, and occupational or academic demands, contribute to the prevalence of LBP. In adolescents, prolonged sitting, improper posture, and excessive screen time are significant contributors, while in the elderly, age-related degenerative changes, decreased muscle strength, and chronic conditions such as osteoporosis play a major role. This study utilizes a literature review and observational analysis to explore the similarities and differences in LBP risk factors across different age groups. The findings suggest that early prevention through proper ergonomics, regular exercise, and healthy lifestyle choices can help reduce the incidence of LBP. Additionally, awareness and education about spinal health should be emphasized in both adolescents and the elderly to mitigate future complications. This research highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, including physiotherapy, medical interventions, and lifestyle modifications, in managing and preventing LBP effectively.

Abstract

Mental health issues among vocational high school (SMK) students are becoming increasingly concerning, affecting their academic performance and overall well-being. This study explores the role of linguistic approaches and language counseling in improving students' mental health at SMK An Naas Binjai. The research employs a qualitative method, incorporating interviews, observations, and document analysis to understand how language influences students’ emotional expression, stress management, and social interactions. Findings indicate that a structured linguistic approach, including expressive writing, guided discussions, and positive communication strategies, helps students articulate their emotions better and develop coping mechanisms. Additionally, language counseling, which integrates psychological support with effective communication techniques, enables students to express their feelings constructively, reducing anxiety and enhancing self-confidence. The study highlights the importance of integrating language-based mental health interventions into the school curriculum to create a supportive learning environment. This research suggests that teachers and counselors should be trained in linguistics-based counseling techniques to provide more effective emotional support. Schools should also incorporate structured language activities that encourage open communication and emotional resilience. The findings contribute to the growing discourse on educational psychology by emphasizing the intersection of language, counseling, and mental health in vocational education settings.

Abstract

Low back pain, also known as low back pain, is a common condition characterized by pain or discomfort in the lower back area, which is between the lower ribs and the buttock folds. This condition can be mild to severe, and can be temporary or chronic. One of the nonpharmacological methods that is often used to reduce the intensity of pain is ice packs. Ice packs are able to provide an analgesic effect by lowering local blood flow and reducing inflammation in the area experiencing pain. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of ice packs in reducing low back pain in office administration employees. The research design uses an experimental method with a one group pre-test–post-test design approach. The research sample consisted of 25 respondents who were administrative employees at the Helvetia Health Institute. Pain intensity measurements were taken before and after the administration of ice packs to determine the effect of this therapy on low back pain. The results showed a decrease in the intensity of low back pain with an average value before treatment of 51.63 and after treatment decreasing to 38.8. Statistical analysis yielded a significance value (p) of 0.004 < 0.05, which showed that ice packs had a significant effect on reducing low back pain in administrative employees. Regular application of ice packs can be a simple, safe, and effective intervention that can be done independently at home by employees to reduce pain. This study provides recommendations for health workers to promote ice pack therapy as a non-pharmacological pain relief method, especially for office workers who often experience low back pain due to static work positions.

Abstract

Motor development in infants is a crucial process that occurs gradually and follows the principles of age-appropriate development. Each fundamental motor stage—such as tummy time, rolling over, sitting, crawling, standing, and walking—must be passed through sequentially to ensure optimal motor concept development. Skipping or insufficient stimulation of these stages may lead to difficulties in understanding functional body movements. One of the main causes of delayed motor development includes a lack of motor stimulation time, overly restrictive parental supervision, and low levels of motivation and stimulation provided to the child. Tummy time, or placing the baby in a prone position while awake, is a proven effective form of motor stimulation that supports the development of the baby’s neck, back, and arm muscles. This activity also assists infants in reaching subsequent developmental milestones such as rolling over and crawling. This Community Service Program (PkM) was conducted at the Physioroom Clinic and was attended by 15 mothers with infants aged 3 to 6 months. The objective of the program was to enhance mothers’ knowledge regarding the importance of tummy time in supporting infant motor development. The program's implementation included educational sessions, tummy time practice demonstrations, group discussions, and interactive Q&A sessions. To measure the increase in participant knowledge, a pre-test and post-test were administered before and after the activity. The results of this PkM activity showed an increase in the average knowledge score from 6.4 in the pre-test to 8.6 in the post-test. This improvement demonstrates the program’s effectiveness in educating mothers about the benefits of tummy time for infant motor development. It is hoped that the mothers will consistently apply this stimulation at home to optimally support their children's growth and development.

Abstract

Myogenic low back pain is a complaint of pain in the lower back area caused by disorders of muscle tissue or tendons, without nerve involvement. This complaint is often experienced by individuals who perform repetitive physical activities or maintain a hunched sitting position for long periods, resulting in muscle fatigue and discomfort. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of McKenzie Exercise and infrared therapy in reducing myogenic low back pain. The study design used a one-group pre- and post-test with control design, with a total of 20 employees in the rehabilitation unit of RSU Medika Tanjung Mulia who had met the inclusion criteria. Subjects were randomly divided into two groups: Group I received McKenzie Exercise and infrared therapy interventions along with standard hospital therapy, while Group II only received standard hospital therapy. Pain levels were measured using a Numeric Rating Scale before and after the intervention. The results of statistical analysis showed a significant reduction in pain in both groups after the intervention, with a p value = 0.000 (p < 0.05). In addition, the results of the comparison between groups showed that the group receiving McKenzie Exercise and infrared therapy experienced a greater reduction in pain than the control group. This suggests that the combination of McKenzie Exercise and infrared therapy is more effective in reducing myogenic low back pain. This study recommends the use of both interventions as part of the physiotherapy management of low back pain caused by muscle disorders.
