Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji tentang kebiasaan menyirih (man belo) bagi masyarakat Karo di Desa Kutabuluh, Kabupaten Karo, Sumatera Utara. Desa Kutabuluh adalah salah satu komunitas yang mempertahankan tradisi ini, yang telah menjadi bagian integral dalam kehidupan mereka selama berabad-abad. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengungkap makna, fungsi, serta mengidentifikasi tantangan dan hambatan yang dihadapi masyarakat dalam menjaga keberlangsungan tradisi menyirih. Penelitian ini mengugunakan pendekatan kualitatif, Metode penelitian yang diterapkan adalah deskriptif, dengan menggunakan teknik pengumpulan data melalui observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. dengan anggota komunitas menyirih dan tokoh adat. Hasil penelitian mengungkap bahwa tradisi menyirih memiliki makna mendalam dalam budaya masyarakat Karo, termasuk sebagai sarana komunikasi, ekspresi kebersamaan, dan perwujudan nilai-nilai kehidupan. Meskipun tradisi ini menghadapi tekanan dari perubahan sosial dan ekonomi, masyarakat Karo di Desa Kutabuluh tetap berkomitmen untuk mempertahankan tradisi ini. Solusi yang diusulkan melibatkan kampanye kesadaran masyarakat, pendidikan budaya, kerjasama dengan pemerintah, dan pembuatan bahan dokumentasi guna melestarikan serta menghidupkan kembali tradisi menyirih agar tetap relevan dalam konteks sosial dan budaya modern. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan panduan untuk menjaga warisan budaya yang berharga ini dan memahami peranannya dalam kehidupan masyarakat Karo.

Abstract

This research examines the betel habit (man belo) of the Karo people in Kutabuluh Village, Karo Regency, North Sumatra. Kutabuluh Village is one of the communities that maintains this tradition, which has been an integral part of their lives for centuries. The aim of this research is to reveal the meaning, function, and identify the challenges and obstacles faced by the community in maintaining the continuity of the betel tradition. This research uses a qualitative approach. The research method used is descriptive, data collection techniques used are observation, interviews and documentation with members of the betel community and traditional leaders. The research results reveal that the betel tradition has deep meaning in the culture of the Karo people, including as a means of communication, expression of togetherness, and embodiment of life values. Even though this tradition is facing pressure from social and economic changes, the Karo people in Kutabuluh Village remain committed to maintaining this tradition. The proposed solution involves public awareness campaigns, cultural education, collaboration with the government, and the creation of documentation materials to preserve and revive the betel tradition so that it remains relevant in the modern social and cultural context. It is hoped that this research can provide guidance for preserving this valuable cultural heritage and understanding its role in the lives of the Karo people.

Abstract

This research examines the professionalism of teachers in teaching social studies at the SMP Cerdas Murni. The aim is to describe how professional teachers teach social studies at this school. Using a qualitative approach, the research applies an analytical descriptive method with data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings show that social studies teachers at the SMP Cerdas Murni demonstrate strong mastery of the four key competencies: pedagogical, personality, social, and professional. These competencies are critical in creating an effective learning atmosphere, sparking student interest in learning, developing their potential, and motivating achievement, thereby significantly contributing to the success of the learning process. The professionalism of these teachers is influenced by input factors, such as educational background and teaching experience, and output factors, including facilities and a supportive work environment. The principal actively enhances teacher professionalism through several strategies: involving teachers in professional development activities, holding regular performance evaluations, encouraging innovative teaching practices, and providing both formal and emotional support. These efforts aim to continuously improve teaching quality, positively impact student achievement, and raise overall educational standards.
