Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the obstacles faced when presenting ESP procedure text through oral presentations in business and marketing majors and how to overcome those obstacles. This study used a case study design to understand the whole case in the totality of the environment. The subject of this study was an English teacher in a private Vocational High School (VHS) majoring in business and marketing in West Java, Indonesia. This study used two data collection techniques: observation and interview. The data was analyzed using thematic analysis. This study reported that there were several obstacles faced, such as the lack of students' readiness in presenting ESP procedure text through oral presentation (lack of confidence and lack of language mastery), lack of teacher's readiness in handling ESP teaching, and the mismatch between the given curriculum and the business and marketing students' need. Further, there were also several alternative solutions to overcome those obstacles, such as modifying the material and instructional model based on student's needs, using additional educational tools, and watching students' progress in preparing their oral presentations.

Abstract

This study aimed to discover the history of Muhammadiyah politics, including Muhammadiyah's political ideology, the pattern of Muhammadiyah relations with political parties, Muhammadiyah views on democracy, and Muhammadiyah's participation in the national political constellation since the founding of the MIAI. The study used historical method with the stages of (1) choosing a topic, (2) gathering sources, (3) verifying, (4) interpreting, and (5) writing. Further, data collection techniques in this study used library techniques. This study showed that Muhammadiyah uses political strategies, such as the Khittah Ujung Pandang 1971 and Khittah Denpasar 2002, as political guidelines. In its history, Muhammadiyah has three relationship patterns with political parties: direct relationship patterns, indirect relationship patterns, and neutral relationship patterns. Furthermore, Muhammadiyah is not anti-politics; Muhammadiyah even supports democracy based on ethics. Muhammadiyah's involvement in politics has started since it participated in MIAI, PII, Masyumi, and Parmusi.

Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition is fundamental to language proficiency, yet retention remains a persistent cognitive challenge for students. Conventional rote-learning strategies often fail to facilitate long-term recall. This study examines the effectiveness of the keyword technique in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. Employing a quantitative quasi-experimental design, the research involved 48 students selected through cluster random sampling. The samples were separated into two groups: an experimental group of 26 students (taught by using the keyword technique) and a control group of 22 students (taught by using conventional strategy). Data were collected using a validated multiple-choice vocabulary test administered before and after the treatment. This result validates a notable difference in outcomes where the experimental group demonstrated better performance; consequently, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (H0). These findings confirm that the Keyword Technique significantly enhances vocabulary mastery by leveraging acoustic and imagery associations. Consequently, this strategy is recommended to foster more effective vocabulary retention.
