Abstract

As technology develops, the rapid increase in PV capacity will affect the grid. This makes it important to determine the PV limit that can be injected into the grid defined as the PV Hosting Capacity (PVHC). In this paper, the author evaluates and analyses the impact of PV connections on medium voltage distribution lines (20kv) using ETAP 19.01 simulation. A medium voltage Grid with a capacity of 30MVA, has an industrial load varies from 650 kVA to 25 kVA with the total load capacity of 2225 KVA. The loads are supplied from two sources, grid and PV system. The simulation results state that the best of grid performance which provide the best losses and voltage condition when connecting 100% capacity of PV to the existing grid network is by setting the inverter power factor to 0.9. This setting will provide lowest power losses of 0,7 kW and improve the voltage value.

Abstract

Abstract

The wood processing industry heavily relies on three-phase induction motors to drive high-power equipment such as chipper machines. One of the major challenges in operating these motors is the high inrush current during startup, which can destabilize the power system and accelerate equipment wear. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of using a soft starter as a starting method for a 400kW induction motor in a chipper application. The research method is an experimental case study involving direct field observation and theoretical calculations of electrical parameters such as nominal current, current limiting, torque, and trip class. The observation results show that the actual starting current of 1,216.15 A remains below the calculated current limiting threshold of 1,575 A, while the trip class value of 2,835 A provides optimal protection. The use of a soft starter proves effective in reducing inrush current, maintaining voltage stability, and enhancing the reliability and efficiency of motor operation. This research supports the application of soft starters as a suitable solution for high-power motor starting in heavy industrial settings.

Abstract

Abstract

Battery performance can be affected by operational disturbances such as overcharging and deep discharging, which may lead to voltage instability, temperature rise, and accelerated degradation. This study analyzes the effect of discharge current on the voltage and temperature characteristics of a lead-acid battery in a 220 V DC LAA system using a dummy load method. The experimental test was conducted using a Torkel 840 battery discharge tester with a constant discharge current of 25 A for a duration of 10 hours. Parameters including total battery voltage, average cell voltage, battery temperature, and electrolyte specific gravity were measured periodically during the discharge process. The minimum allowable battery voltage was determined based on manufacturer specifications to ensure safe operation. The results indicate that the battery voltage decreased gradually and remained above the minimum allowable limit of 187.2 V, demonstrating stable voltage performance under constant load conditions. Battery temperature increased moderately from 22.36 °C to 25.93 °C and remained within the recommended operating range. The electrolyte specific gravity showed a consistent decrease corresponding to normal electrochemical behaviour. These results confirm that the tested lead-acid battery is suitable for reliable operation as a DC backup power source in power plant applications.
