Abstract

This article aims to examine the role of supporting characters in the novel Kafka on the Shore in shaping the identity of the main character, Kafka, which has not been actively discussed in previous studies. This article classifies some supporting characters into characters who were removed from the shaping of Kafka’s identity, along with the reasons why their roles had to be eliminated, and characters who contributed to Kafka’s growth process along with the roles they played. This article uses the concept of the Keirsey Temperament Sorter, developed by David Keirsey. Moreover, to explain the relationship between Kafka and his father, as well as the older woman he loves, Miss Saeki, this article uses concept from psychoanalytic theory, namely Oedipus Complex by Sigmund Freud and Object Relations by Melanie Klein. Character whose role was removed from Kafka’s identity shaping is Johnnie Walker, or Tamura, Kafka’s father. Characters who support Kafka’s identity shaping are Crow and Oshima as the Idealist, Nakata as the Guardian, Sakura as the Artisan, and Miss Saeki as the Rational. The removal of Johnnie Walker indicates the importance of compromise in facing the dilemma between Westernization and maintaining Japanese tradition. Westernization is inevitable to some extent. However, in describing his identity as a Japanese, novelist Haruki Murakami through Kafka shows his intention to look back into traditional Japanese beliefs rather than emphasizing Westernization as the primary concept

Abstract

This research examines the representation of idol life in Mikito-P’s “Sarishinohara” song trilogy whose titles consist of “Sarishinohara”, “Yonjuunana”, and “Akaito” using the Roland Barthes semiotic model theory. The purpose of this study is to determine the physical structure and inner structure of the song lyrics of the “Sarishinohara” trilogy, then analyze the denotation, connotation, and myth contained in the music video according to the Roland Barthes semiotic model. The research method uses qualitative research methods or is written in descriptive form. Based on the results of data analysis, it is known that the negative side of idol life in Japan is in the form of mental pressure experienced by idols, limitations in relationships, and negative public behavior towards idols

Abstract

Penelitian ini menggunakan film Jepang yang berjudul Flying Colors （ビリギャル） karya Nobuhiro Doi sebagai objek material. Sementara objek formal pada penelitian ini yakni representasi fenomena toxic parents pada tokoh Ayah. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini yaitu metode deskriptif kualitatif. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yakni memahami struktur naratif film Flying Colors （ビリギャル） karya sutradara Nobuhiro Doi serta representasi toxic parents pada tokoh Ayah. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah mengetahui karakteristik toxic parents berdasarkan teori Susan Forward yang terdiri atas physical abusive parents, verbal abusive parents, dan controller parents. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah mengetahui jenis toxic parents menurut Dunham dan Dermer, penyebab dan dampak yang ditmbulkan akibat toxic parenting. Jenis toxic parents berdasarkan konsep Dunham dan Dermer. Adapun penyebab dari dari toxic parenting yaitu perasaan kecewa yang dialami oleh orang tua di masa lalu. Sementara itu, dampak yang ditimbulkan dari toxic parenting yakni anak memberontak terhadap orang tua.
