Abstract

This research aimed to show Reog and its possessions that may occur during the performance as a cultural heritage in Indonesia. Only a few people know what exactly happens which leads people to have misconception about this cultural identity. It seems to be a need to figure out about it. The research focused to show the real possession occurs including what the players do, see, and feel during the performance. This study was conducted in Pojoksari, Ambarawa, Central Java. The qualitative data was gained through interviews and observation while the questionnaire utilized was used for triangulating the data from interviews. The researcher constructed the questions for both interviews and questionnaire after the observations. The interview was conducted to the players, shaman, and the music players while the questionnaire was given to the remaining members. The result revealed that this group has never had made-up possessions. Besides, during the state of being possessed, the players tend to feel and see nothing and they usually move uncontrollably. After the performance, in fact, they feel dizzy and pain all over their body. Some requirements are fundamental to perform Reog safely such as shaman, players, music, and sesajen. This research is expected to bring contribution to other researchers to explore as no detail study was conducted on this related topic.

Abstract

The changes caused by the pandemic of COVID-19 led education sectors in Indonesia to find a new way of teaching-learning processes. Due to the pandemic, students found it difficult to keep themselves motivated to keep up with school materials which could affect their academic from time to time. Furthermore, they still attended the online class but they experienced learning loss because they could not maximize the potential of the e-learning used. This study aimed at evaluating the use of ELENA utilized during the online teaching-learning processes in UNNES which affects students‘ academic motivation. Observations, interview, and 20 Likert-scale items of questionnaire were conducted and distributed to 45 students of English Literature and Education Department of UNNES. The result of this study proved that students had good impressions towards the use of ELENA as a platform to their teaching-learning activities. Some of their answers were the students' quality of work, the students' attitudes towards assignments, the students' confidence, the learning process, the design of ELENA, the students’ behavior in lessons, and the students’ attendance. This research is expected to be one of the references for other researchers to conduct similar studies on this related topic.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between student-teacher interaction, students' academic motivation, and the teacher's motivation in the eighth-grade English classroom.   Quantitative and qualitative data on student-teacher interaction and academic motivation in English learning were collected using a questionnaire, observation, and interview.   137 eighth-grade students at Semarang's Karangturi junior high school in the academic year 2022-2023 were the subjects of this study.  Using an observation sheet from Ottevanger (2001), it was determined to see to what extent the teacher uses student-teacher interaction to increase students' and teachers' academic motivation. A final interview is conducted with the English teacher to determine her perception of student-teacher interaction. The results demonstrate a correlation between student-teacher interaction and students’ academic motivation in English classes. The instructor utilizes these interactions by posing questions and issuing directives. Moreover, the instructor concurred that student-teacher interactions are highly beneficial for both students and instructors.

Abstract

This study explores the application of cooperative principles and illocutionary force in Samsung Indonesia"™s Instagram Reels captions from August 2024. The study aims to evaluate how Grice"™s maxims"”quality, quantity, relevance, and manner"”are employed in captions and how these principles trigger illocutionary acts, particularly calls to action (CTAs). A qualitative approach was used to analyze the linguistic and pragmatic strategies of the captions, focusing on their effectiveness in engaging audiences and influencing behavior. The analysis reveals a strong adherence to the maxims of relevance and quantity, with captions effectively aligning with Reel content and providing sufficient actionable information. However, occasional lapses in the maxims of quality and manner indicate areas for improvement, such as reducing promotional ambiguity and simplifying overly complex phrasing. These improvements could enhance the captions"™ clarity and factual precision. Illocutionary force analysis highlights a predominant use of directive acts, with CTAs designed to prompt specific audience actions, such as exploring products or participating in events. Expressive acts, aimed at evoking emotional responses, were present but less frequently, reflecting a focus on action-oriented engagement. Commissive and assertive acts were minimally observed, indicating a preference for short-term engagement strategies over trust-building. This study concludes that Samsung Indonesia effectively integrates pragmatic principles with strategic CTAs to drive audience interaction and brand engagement. These findings provide valuable insights into optimizing linguistic strategies for social media marketing and contribute to the broader understanding of digital communication practices.
