Abstract

The 21st century teachers have been affected by globalization, technological innovation and diversity in workplace thus affecting their professionalism. Teachers who develop unconcern attitudes and suffer neglect are likely to have their performance at work affected. Therefore, this study examined organizational cynicism and self-efficacy as predictors of professionalism among teachers in Oyo State, Nigeria. Cross-sectional survey design was adopted while purposive sampling technique was used to select one Local Government Area for the study. Data were collected from 300 teachers using validated scales and analysed using t-test of independent means and multiple regressions analysis to test three hypotheses at a p < 0.05 level of significance. The result revealed that organizational cynicism and self-efficacy significantly influenced professionalism among teachers. Also, organizational cynicism and self-efficacy jointly and independently predicted professionalism among teachers. Finally, organizational cynicism and self-efficacy independently predicted professionalism among study participants. The study concluded that organisational cynicism and self-efficacy are strong predictors of professionalism among teachers. Therefore, government agencies and other stakeholders should work together to improve teachers’ professional skills.

Abstract

Healthcare workers experience multifaceted mental health issues due to the nature of their work. Some studies have investigated predictors of mental health with varied results. In Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria, this study looked at the moderating effects of work-family conflict self-efficacy (WFCSC) on the association between work-family conflict and mental health among healthcare professionals. The study adopted cross-sectional survey design while purposive sampling technique was used to select three state hospitals in Akure metropolis. Three hypotheses were tested through the use of zero-order correlation and three-step hierarchical multiple regression analysis on data obtained from 201 healthcare workers using validated scales. All hypotheses were accepted at p < .05 level of significance. The result indicated that work-family conflict significantly predicted mental health among study participants.  Also, the result revealed that WFCSE significantly predicted mental health among healthcare workers. Finally, the result showed that WFCSE significantly moderated the relationship between work-family conflict and mental health among healthcare workers). The study found that among study participants, WFCSE is a powerful predictor and modifier of mental health. Consequently, it is advised that management offer mental health support services to employees in order to lessen the detrimental impact that work-family conflict self-efficacy has on mental health outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Sexual orientation has become an emerging issue that affects different populations and cultures in Africa including Nigeria. Studies done on predictors of sexual orientation come with varied results. Objective: This study investigates parenting styles, sexual abuse and self-esteem as likely predictors of sexual orientation among undergraduates in tertiary institutions in Ibadan, Nigeria. Method: Cross-sectional method was adopted while purposive sampling technique was used to select the study population. Data were collected from 472 undergraduates using validated questionnaires and analysed using multiple regressions and independent sample t-test. Two hypotheses were tested and accepted at p =.001 level of significance. Results: The result revealed that parenting styles, sexual abuse and self-esteem jointly predicted sexual orientation among study participants. Moreover,  parenting styles, sexual abuse and self-esteem independently predicted sexual orientation among study participants. Conclusion: Parenting styles, sexual abuse and self-esteem are excellent predictors of sexual orientation among study participants. The novelty of this finding is that sexual orientation is less openly discussed among study population. Abstract

This study investigated academic impairment and social support as predictors of resilient behavior among physically-challenged students. Cross-sectional research design was adopted while purposive sampling technique was used to select Lagos and Ekiti States, South-west Nigeria. Data were conveniently collected from 374 physically-challenged students using validated scales. Data collected were analyzed using multiple regression and t-test of independent samples to test four hypotheses at p 0.01 level of significance. The results indicated that academic impairment and significant others support independently predicted resilient behavior among physically-challenged students. Also, the result revealed that academic impairment and social support jointly predicted resilient behavior among study participants. The study concluded academic impairment and significant others' support are important predictors of resilient behavior among physically-challenged students.
