Abstract

Red betel (Piper crocatum) is a herbal plant that has various bioactivities including antioxidant activity. Red betel leaf can be used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus and has properties as an antioxidant. This study aims to find the activity of normal levels of creatinine and urea induced by Streptozotosin-Nicotinamide in diabetic rats. Red betel leaves are extracted by soaking in 96% ethanol solvent. Phytochemical screening is used to test the class of compounds in red betel leaf extract using the test tube method. Experimental animals in the study were placed in 6 treatment groups, namely no treatment (CMC 1%), negative control (STZ-NA), positive control (Glibenclamide), dose 1 (125 mg/kg BW), dose 2 (250 mg/kg BW), and dose 3 (500 mg/kg BW). A UV-Vis spectrophotometer was used to measure creatinine and urea on days 24, 31, and 39. One Way ANOVA and Post Hoc Test Multiple Comparisons-Tukey HSD were the data analyzers used. Flavonoids, tannins, saponins and alkaloids were shown from the phytochemical screening. Data analysis showed that the 500 mg/kg BW ethanol extract of red betel leaves was able to produce creatinine and urea better than the 125 mg/kg BW and 250 mg/kg BW ethanol extracts of red betel leaves. This situation is due to red betel leaf extract 500 mg/kg BW Data analysis showed that the 500 mg/kg BW ethanol extract of red betel leaves was able to produce creatinine and urea better than the 125 mg/kg BW and 250 mg/kg BW ethanol extracts of red betel leaves.

Abstract

Diabetic nephropathy is a complication of diabetes mellitus which results in changes in the structure and function of the kidneys. Red betel leaf (Piper crocatum) can be used as a treatment for diabetic nephropathy, which has antioxidant properties. This study aims to determine the optimal dose of ethanol extract of red betel leaves, the effect of ethanol extract of red betel leaves on blood glucose, improvement of kidney function and kidney histopathology in STZ-NA induced rats. This study used 30 male white rats of the Wistar strain, 5 groups were conditioned to experience hyperglycemia and waited for three weeks after induction of STZ-NA via intra peritoneal 60 mg/kg BW and 120 mg/kg BW. After it was stated that the rats had diabetic nephropathy, they were given an oral test preparation. Parameters measured were blood glucose, BUN, and renal histopathological tests. Data analysis used the ANOVA method followed by the LSD Post Hoc test. The test results of antihyperglycemic activity and improvement of kidney function stated that the ethanol extract of red betel leaves at doses of 125 mg/kg BW and 250 mg/kg BW had a significant difference between the normal group, negative control and positive control, but at a dose of 500 mg/kg BW there was no difference significantly with the positive control where the ethanol extract of red betel leaves has the same effect as the positive control. The results of the renal histopathological test at a dose of 250 mg/kg BW were significantly different from the normal control, negative control, positive control, but at a dose of 500 mg/kg BW there was no difference from the positive group.

Abstract

Aromatherapy candles are candles made by mixing a base material, such as solid paraffin, with essential oils derived from certain plants. Training activities aimed at increasing knowledge in developing new products are still rarely conducted. This situation also occurs at SMA Negeri 2 Palangka Raya, where there is a lack of practical skills training programs that utilize local potential, as well as limited entrepreneurship development among students. This community service activity was conducted in October 2025 and aimed to provide training in making aromatherapy candles to students of SMA Negeri 2 Palangka Raya. This program employed the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method and focused on producing aromatherapy candles using a combination of cinnamon and citronella essential oils. The main participants were 45 tenth-grade students. The improvement in students’ skills was measured using pre-tests and post-tests, along with questionnaires regarding the aromatherapy candle-making training. The results showed that 53.33% of participants were interested in the skills to be acquired, 55.56% rated the implementation of the activity as very good, and 51.11% considered the theme of the activity to be very beneficial. Evaluation results indicated that 81.2% of participants demonstrated excellent knowledge in the candle-making process. The pre-test and post-test results also showed an improvement in scores after the training was conducted. In conclusion, the aromatherapy candle-making training using a combination of cinnamon and citronella essential oils at SMA Negeri 2 Palangka Raya was successfully implemented and achieved its intended objectives. This was evidenced by the high enthusiasm of participants and the improvement in their knowledge and skills after participating in the activity.
