Abstract

The dichotomy that is often debated is patriarchal and feminist cultural systems. The centralization of human life is largely directed towards men, both in social and religious circles, thereby encouraging the objectification of women and dominating them. The space for women seems to be closed, this also happens in the Christian sphere, where there are still churches that adhere to a literal interpretation of the Bible. As a result, the reading of 1 Timothy 2:8-15 is misinterpreted. The main aim of this research is to reconstruct and present egalitarianization between women and men based on 1 Timothy 2:8-15, especially in the scope of worship services. It is still found that some churches reject women as priests. This research uses qualitative methods, with a critical historical approach. The results show that the Ephesian women were contaminated with a life of debauchery or a luxurious lifestyle, wanting to appear beyond their capacity. So they tend to ignore Christian values. So, it cannot be a measure to reject the existence of women as ministers of worship (pastor), only the church needs to pay attention to Christian values and foster them in Indonesia context.

Abstract

The concept of the Logos in the Gospel of John has long been the subject of theological and philosophical discussions. In the era of modern science, questions have arisen about the relevance and relationship between this concept of the Logos and the development of science and human rationality. A hermeneutical approach is used to interpret the meaning of the Logos in historical and contemporary contexts. This study aims to explore the relationship between the concept of the Logos in the Gospel of John and the development of modern science, and to analyze how this understanding can bridge the gap between faith and rationality. The Logos in the Gospel of John is understood as the creative and rational principle underlying the universe, which is also manifested in Jesus Christ. There is a parallelism between the function of the Logos in creation and the role of human rationality in the development of science. The concept of the Logos offers a framework for integrating scientific progress with spiritual wisdom. This view challenges the dichotomy between science and faith, proposing that both realms an complement each other in understanding reality. The concept of the Logos in the Gospel of John has significant relevance in the era of modern science. It offers a holistic perspective that allows for the integration of scientific and spiritual understanding, encouraging a more comprehensive approach to knowledge and reality. This understanding has the potential to bridge the gap between faith and rationality, paving the way for a more constructive dialogue between religion and science.

Abstract

This article aims to uncover the mystery or relevance of the number "666" in Revelation 13:16-18 with an apocalyptic approach and provide a contextual understanding of the church today. The method used is qualitative with a literature study type and an apocalyptic approach in understanding the text of Revelation 13:16-18. The results of the study indicate that the mystery or revelation of the number '666' refers to the authoritarian and oppressive government system that occurred in the latter half of the first century AD under the reign of Emperor Domitian. The number '666' specifically refers to Domitian as a representation of human power that opposes divine authority. In conclusion, the sign '666' is not a futuristic prediction of modern technology or a sign of the end times, but rather a symbol of Emperor Domitian's authoritarian government system in the oppression of Christians at that time. The implication for the church today is the need to be vigilant against systems of power that oppress religious freedom, while maintaining Christian faith and values amidst world pressure.

Abstract

Main issue discussed in this study is the tension between the Gospel and culture in the context of contemporary Christian missions. Often, efforts to proclaim the Gospel are seen as conflicting with local cultural values, creating a dilemma between syncretism and orthodoxy. The aim of this research is to offer an alternative understanding that bridges this tension through an incarnational concept, and to explore how the Gospel and culture can mutually interpolate without losing their respective essences. The methods used are literature review and theological-missional analysis, focusing on the incarnational understanding as an approach in Christian missions. This study explores various theological and missiological perspectives to formulate a alternative understanding of the relationship between the Gospel and culture. The findings show that an incarnational approach allows for dynamic dialogue and interaction between the Gospel and culture. The Gospel can become a renewing agent that purifies the positive aspects of culture, while culture provides a contextual "language" for understanding and experiencing the Gospel. This process is not mere syncretism, but a creative effort to translate the Gospel message into local cultural categories without losing its integrity. In conclusion, the concept of the “Gospel in the Womb of Culture” offers a new paradigm in contemporary Christian missions. The incarnational approach opens the way for the creation of authentic expressions of faith, rooted in the Christian tradition but also relevant to the local cultural context. This implies the need for a shift from a confrontational approach to one that appreciates local wisdom while remaining faithful to the essence of the Gospel.

Abstract

Abstract

The emergence of the progressive Christian movement has sparked controversy and is considered a deviation from traditional Christian teachings. However, on the other hand, progressive Christianity is also seen as an effort to contextualize the Christian faith within the ever-evolving realities of the times. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach to illustrate the phenomenon of progressive Christianity. The aim of this study is to explore progressive Christianity and its development from the perspective of constructive-decolonial theology, thereby opening a more constructive paradigm in line with contemporary human life. Progressive Christianity is viewed as a "liminal space," or between old traditions and renewal in contemporary Christian theology. Constructive-decolonial theology are used as perspectives to understand progressive Christianity, where constructive theology encourages the Christian faith to exhibit dynamic openness. Progressive Christianity is a movement that has emerged in response to social, cultural, and theological changes. Openness and willingness to listen to and engage in constructive dialogue amidst differences are necessary, making liminality a space for ongoing theological creativity and transformation.

Abstract

AbtractThe aim of this research is to explore and assess the traditional ritual of “Dalumatehu Sémbanua” and compare it with the prophetic traditions found in the Old Testament. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing literature reviews and in-depth interviews for data collection. The findings illustrate how “Dalumatehu Sémbanua” demonstrates the cultural and spiritual responses of the Sangihe community in defending their land as a collective “home” for all living beings and as a representation of God’s body. Prayers directed to Almighty God, Gengghonalangi, through liturgical expressions, reflect the community’s plea to be liberated from all transgressions, particularly ecological sins perpetrated by both local and international mining companies. The “Dalumatehu Sémbanua” ritual not only highlights the communal identity of the Sangihe people, who possess a unique cultural heritage, but also reveals the ecotheological concept within the ritual that views Sangihe Island’s nature as a shared habitat for the earth’s community, including both human and nonhuman inhabitants. Anyexploitation of the island is seen as an act that harms God’s body. Through the “Dalumatehu Sémbanua” ritual, as a form of prophetic liturgical response, the human community is reminded and urged to change their mindset and actions towards the understanding that nature is an integral and inseparable part of the earth’s community, with God at its core.

Abstract

The increasing brutality of state apparatuses in recent years has disrupted communal life and poses a significant threat to individual subjectivity. This phenomenon—often referred to as “state terrorism”—manifests under the pretext of maintaining public security and social order, yet frequently targets specific community groups, functioning as a mechanism of control rather than protection. This study draws on secondary data from reports, media coverage, and human rights documentation from 2021-2022 to examine the extent and impact of such violence. Using Michel Foucault’s critical-philosophical framework, the analysis reveals that state apparatuses often act as agents of systemic brutality, undermining human rights and fostering a climate of fear. Moreover, the entanglement of capitalism, racism, and discrimination transforms social relationships, encouraging mutual surveillance among citizens and masking state coercion as mediationAbstrakBrutalitas aparat beberapa tahun terakhir menjadi sebuah fenomena yang mengganggu kehidupan bermasyarakat, bahkan menimbulkan ancaman terhadap subjektivitas individu.

Abstract

This article examines the narrative of “Towards Golden Indonesia 2045” within the framework of postcolonial studies by highlighting the threat of meta-capitalism to Indonesia’s ecology. Meta-capitalism is an advanced form of global capitalism that not only exploits natural resources materially, but also dominates discourse, policies, and social structures. Through a qualitative approach with postcolonial analysis, this study shows that the narrative of sustainable development packaged in the spirit of “Golden Indonesia” actually contains ecological and social paradoxes. This narrative often justifies the penetration of foreign capital and extractive policies that harm local communities and exacerbate structural inequality. This study offers an “ecological triage” approach as a form of resistance to meta-capitalism, namely through emergency conservation, ecological restoration, and advocacy of sustainable policies. This article recommends the need for a reformulation of Indonesia’s development paradigm by emphasizing ecological justice, local independence, and deconstruction of capitalist ideology in national developmen

Abstract

This study evaluates the relationship between postcolonial theory and theology, highlighting how colonial power structures still shape theological narratives in the postcolonial context. Postcolonial theology not only revises traditional approaches to sacred texts but also dismantles the hegemonic relations that construct epistemological hierarchies in religious discourse. Using a literature review method, this study analyzes how the concept of postcolonialism operates at three levels of theology: faith theology (first-order theology), deliberative theology (second-order theology), and academic theology (third-order theology). The results of this study found that the construction of the relationship between theology and postcolonialism moves in three reflective layers. First, theology that is inherent in the individual, namely the experience of faith formed in the body and consciousness of the individual, often contains hidden and real colonial traces. Second, theology that is reflected on in the community (church), as a space for sharing experiences and building a collective narrative that is able to treat historical wounds and fight for recovery. Third, theology that is discussed academically, namely a reflective-critical effort to challenge, dismantle, and reconstruct theological discourse through a cross-contextual approach and decolonial awareness.
