Abstract

Growth mindset and students’ achievement have linearity in the previous studies. In EFL setting students’ achievement is related to English skills. Success in language learning is discovered by acquiring speaking ability. Thus this research aims to find out the correlation between students’ growth mindset and students’ speaking ability at the Second Semester Students of English Education Department of State Islamic University of Salatiga in t.rhe Academic Year 2021/2022. The methodology used in this study is quantitative method with correlational design. The techniques of collecting data are documentation and questionnaire. Data is analyzed in two ways. First, quantitative data was analyzed using statistical description and inferential descriptive. This study revealed that there is correlation between students’ growth mindset and students’ speaking ability. The value of Sig. (2-tailed) in the person correlation test is 0,027 which is bigger than 0,05 and it means that there is significant correlation between students’ growth mindset and students’ speaking ability. Meanwhile the correlation value is 0,27 that indicated the correlation is weak based on the degree of correlation table that correlation value between 0,21-0,40 is weak correlation. Further discussion is presented in this study.

Abstract

Hybrid learning in this research is a combination of WhatsApp Group online learning with restricted face-to-face learning. This facilitates the learning needs of students who have been accustomed to being online for more than two semesters. This study focuses on (1) how are the perspectives of non-English Department students towards hybrid English learning? (2) what are the challenges and problems they experienced during hybrid English learning? Data from the Google Form for English courses were analyzed qualitatively with a descriptive approach and student interviews were also analyzed qualitatively with thematic analysis. The results show that, first, students have better understanding in hybrid class than online class and they also feel challenged to answer quizzes and questions in an online and offline group of hybrid class; second, low English skill students are easier to understand in hybrid learning, the weather and time management challenge becomes new issues from this research. They affect students' readiness problems of hybrid learning who come late to the offline class. This study also offers English lecturers by making students disciplined in attending hybrid classes and activating their learning enthusiasm and speed of language response.

Abstract

TOEFL is English language testing that is very important to measure someone’s ability as high result of TOEFL measurement brings many advantages for future career. Integration of TOEFL Teaching with technology would be amazing at this era, 21st century. The aims of this study are to know students’ perception on learning TOEFL using Youtube video and Instagram, how the process of learning TOEFL Structure and Written Expression using Youtube and Instagram, and to know whether the students understand the materials or not. Researcher employed qualitative approach using phenomenology design. Data collection techniques are interview, observation, documentation from Instagram account used in the class. The result revealed that students’ perception on learning TOEFL Structure and Written Expression using Youtube and Instagram is positive and good. They were happy and understood the materials that they have watched from Youtube. The learning processes consist of four stages, namely the lecturer opens a class in the what's app group, students are asked to open  Instagram @misteringlish.id to find out the Youtube video used and practice questions, students watch Youtube videos, and students do practise questions. They understand the material and be able to get good and high score when they do more than 13 questions. In conclusion, the result of this study support that Youtube and Instagram are effective to be used in learning TOEFL structure and written expression and it improves students’ understanding.
