Abstract

Cigarette smoke can cause various health problems, one of which is a decrease in fertility in males. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of smoke exposure between with and without filter hand-rolled kretek cigarettes (SKT) and white cigarettes on white rats male reproduction: sperm quality in the form of sperm motility and viability, also the structure of seminiferous tubules. This study used 5 treatment groups (KP), namely controls not given exposure to cigarette smoke (KP0), exposure to unfiltered kretek cigarette smoke (KP1), exposure to filtered kretek cigarettes (KP2), exposure to unfiltered white cigarette smoke (KP3) and exposure to secondhand smoke. filtered white cigarettes (KP4) with treatment placement arrangement in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) and if there is a significant difference, a Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) is carried out. The results obtained on sperm quality, namely sperm motility and viability, decreased. Good quality at KP0 then the quality decreases successively starting from KP1, KP2, KP3 and KP4. The results on histpathological observations of the seminiferous tubules, there were no pathological changes found in all treatments. In contrast to the histopathology of seminiferous tubules, the number of spermatogenic cells showed a significant difference between treatments with the least average spermatogenic count and a decrease in the number of cells from spermatogonia cells to spermatid cells, namely in the treatment group exposure to filtered white cigarette smoke (KP4). Overall, the exposure that caused the most severe impact on all measured parameters was in the treatment group of filtered white cigarette smoke (KP4).

Abstract

One type of sea turtle that often lands to lay eggs on the South coast of the Special Region of Yogyakarta is the Olive Ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea). The last study on the hatching success rate of olive ridley turtles on Pelangi Beach in 2019 was only in semi-natural nests. Currently, on Pelangi Beach, hatching has begun using sand media placed in buckets to avoid rain. This study aims to analyze the comparison of the hatching success rate of olive ridley turtle eggs in semi-natural nests with buckets and environmental factors that support hatching success at Pelangi Beach, Bantul Regency, DIY. The method used is direct observation of the hatching rate from semi-natural methods and buckets with four nests each. Descriptive analysis was carried out to compare the hatching results in the semi-natural nest method with the bucket container nest. Environmental factors in both methods were observed during the incubation process till hach and then compared to determine the differences in environmental factors between methods. The results showed that the percentage of hatching success rate of Olive Ridley turtle eggs was higher in the bucket hatching method (79.00 ± 14.48%), compared to the semi-natural hatching method (74.11 ± 15.84%). Environmental factors between semi-natural and bucket methods in the form of pH, Temperature are not significantly different while the humidity in the bucket is higher than in the semi-natural nest. The results of the study can be concluded that the hatching method using a bucket container is better than using a semi-natural nest, this is because the humidity in the bucket container method is optimally maintained than in a semi-natural nest.

Abstract

Bedog River is one of the rivers that passes through Bantul Regency and has biological resources, one of which is freshwater shrimp. The purpose of this study was to determine the types and potential of freshwater shrimp found in the Bedog River, Bantul Regency, and knowing whether the environmental parameters in the Bedog river are in accordance with the ideal conditions for the growth of freshwater shrimp. The research location was determined by purposive sampling method at three stations (ST), each station made three sampling points. In addition, environmental parameters were also measured including temperature, pH, salinity, river flow velocity, dissolved CO2, and DO. Data analysis was carried out descriptively by comparing the morphological characters of each type of freshwater shrimp. The data obtained are presented in tables and diagrams. The results of the study found four species of shrimp Macrobrachium sintangense, Macrobrachium equidens, Caridina sp. and Caridina elongapoda with a total of 116 individuals. The potential of each type of freshwater shrimp found in the Bedog River is for consumption and ornamental pets. Macrobrachium equidens, M. sintangense, and C. elongapoda have the potential to be consumed, while Caridina sp. potential as ornamental shrimp. Environmental parameters that are in accordance with ideal conditions for the growth of freshwater shrimp in the Bedog River are found at stations I and III, while at station II are less suitable for ideal conditions for shrimp growth because the river is polluted by industrial waste so that the water quality decreases.

Abstract

Abstract. Indonesia has a very high diversity of fish species. However, information on the richness of fish species in Indonesia is still limited. The Gajahwong River is one of the rivers with its upstream in Sleman Regency and the river flows through Yogyakarta Municipality and then through Bantul Regency and empties into the Opak River. The Gajahwong riverbank area is dominated by dense settlements and several factories so that household and factory waste dumped in the Gajahwong River has the potential to reduce its water quality. The purpose of this research was to determine the diversity of fish species found in the Gajahwong River, both native and introduced fish, and also to determine the abiotic environmental conditions. Sampling was done by means of purposive random sampling at three station points (I, II, and III) with each station divided into three sampling points. Measurement of the abiotic environmental parameters was carried out at each sampling point with three replications each. Fish samples were taken and identified. The results showed that there were 18 identified fish species, with details of which 13 were native to Indonesia and 5 (five) were introduced fish. The abiotic environmental parameters are in accordance with the water quality standards of class II-III, supporting the survival of fish in the Gajahwong river.
