Abstract

This study concerned the types and reasons of code-switching on three videos between Bunga Citra Lestari and Daniel Mananta’s conversation. The data source were taken from Bunga Citra Lestari’s YouTube channel entitled “IT’S ME BCL”. The data analysis was conducted a descriptive qualitative method. This study showed 3 types of code switching that found in the findings by applying Poplack’s theory (1980) as cited in Romaine (1989). Those types included intra-sentential switching, tag switching, and inter-sentential switching. The most type of code switching that dominantly occurred in this study namely intra-sentential switching. Those were appeared along the conversation between Bunga Citra Lestari and Daniel Mananta which aimed to convey the motivations through words, clauses, and phrases that were comfortable to be conducted in the second language. Moreover, this study also focused on the reasons of code switching by applying the theory proposed by Hoffman (1991). Those reasons could be divided into talking about certain things, quoting somebody else, showing empathy, using interjection, repeating something, clarifying the speech, and expressing group identity. The most reason of code-switching that dominantly occurred between Bunga Citra Lestari and Daniel Mananta’s conversation was talking about certain things. Those were occurred during the role of Daniel Mananta who was being an interviewer was asking several questions to Bunga Citra Lestari who was being an interviewee that automatically built up their conversation.

Abstract

The aims of this research is focusing to identify of the function of the derivational suffixes found in the BBC News: “War in Gaza”. Descriptive qualitative methods were used to identify the explanation about the function of derivational suffixes that found. The theories from Katamba (1994) and McCarthy (2002) were used to analyze the data. The news from BBC News: “War in Gaza” were used. Based on the analysis, this study found 202 data of suffixes that categorized as class changing and class maintaining. The suffixes that changing the word class found in this study were found 120 (62%) data of noun derived from verb, 11 (6%) data of adjective derived from verb, 20 (10%) data of adjective derived from noun, 9 (5%) data of noun derived from adjective and 33 (17%) data of adverb derived from adjective. It was found many nouns derived from verb suffix in the class changing because based on McCarthy, suffix -er is the most common way to form the noun. Meanwhile the suffix that maintaining the word class, it was found 9 (4%) data. It was only from noun derived from noun because the suffixes are commonly used in the news.

Abstract

Directive speech act refers to a verbal action that aims to convince other social actors to take certain actions. This study analyzed the directive speech act especially the types and meanings that found in Disney’s movie entitled Encanto. Qualitative method was applied in conducting this research. Moreover, two theories that proposed by Yule (1996) and Leech (1981) were used in identifying the types and analyzing the meanings of directive speech act in Encanto movie. This study presented the findings regarding to the types of directive speech act such as request, orders, command, and suggestion. On the other hand, the meanings of directive speech act were consisted of social, denotative, thematic, and connotative meanings. In addition, this research also used Halliday and Hassan’s theory (1985) as supporting theory in analyzing the context of situation. The research data were collected through observation method and presented both formally and informally.
