Abstract

This study examined the rationale behind the United States (US) abstention from UN Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2728, March 25, 2024, which called for a ceasefire in the Israel-Palestine conflict. This research used the Politics of Absence theory to explain the motives behind the abstention. The framework drew on Suzanne Dovi's Typology of Absence, which provides a foundation for understanding strategic objectives such as protection, protest, and partition, which explain state abstention in international voting. With a qualitative approach, this study found that the US decision was driven by the protection of national interests, dissatisfaction with the failure of the resolution to condemn Hamas, and an inclination to explore alternative conflict resolution mechanisms.

against Israel in March 2024. Grounded in the ‘Deterrence by Denial’ theoretical framework, the research explores Iran’s strategic objectives and the key characteristics of this strategy, including the use of diverse military capabilities, the real-time nature of its threat actions, and the competitive dynamics of the deterrence process. Employing a qualitative approach that relies on a comprehensive analysis of primary and secondary sources, the study reveals that Iran’s primary aim was to persuade Israel that any prospective attack would be both costly and ultimately unsuccessful. The research findings highlight strategic implications and recommendations related to understanding regional conflict dynamics, adapting defence strategies, and the potential for escalation in the Middle East

Abstract

This research delves into transformative shifts in United States (US) foreign policy during Donald Trump’s presidency, specifically focusing on withdrawals from crucial international agreements like the Paris Agreement, TPP, UNHRC, UNESCO, and UNRWA. Utilizing the Poliheuristic theory, the study aims to comprehend the rationale behind the US withdrawal from international regimes and organizations during Trump's administration. The research employs a dual-stage assessment within the Poliheuristic theory; the cognitive aspect, considering policymakers’ values, and the rational aspect, evaluating potential gains and losses. President Trump confronted three options for international organizations: remaining, renegotiating, or withdrawing. Qualitative techniques were incorporated to analyze the prioritization of the America First promise and assess the country’s engagement with these entities. Rejecting the option to remain led to a rational evaluation of renegotiation or exit. The decision to withdraw was strategically made to address unmet renegotiation demands, minimizing significant financial burdens for the US.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the adoption of weapon technology in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, specifically focusing on drones, Starlink, and AI-based systems, as a reflection of the evolution of modern warfare. Utilizing Everett Rogers' Diffusion of Innovations Theory, this study investigates how innovation characteristics—relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability—influence the spread of technology within military systems of both sides. A qualitative approach is applied through the analysis of secondary documents, including academic reports, journal articles, and media news, with triangulation employed to ensure data validity. The main findings indicate that technology adoption dynamics are driven by urgent tactical needs and adaptive organizational structures. Both Ukraine and Russia demonstrate rapid innovation cycles through adaptation and emulation of opponent tactics. The conclusion of this research is that the successful adoption of military technology on the modern battlefield heavily relies on the perception of these innovation characteristics, as well as the capacity for adaptation within a dynamic conflict context

Abstract

This paper analyzes the impact of entrepreneur and public figure Elon Musk on the 2022 Russia-Ukraine conflict. Through the use of social network theory and the concept of Popularity, this research shows that although Musk was not an official state actor, he played a significant role in the conflict. His global popularity and extensive connections to both sides of the conflict enabled him to influence the government, media, and public. His actions and statements, such as providing Ukraine with Starlink Internet access and proposing a controversial peace plan, had a visible impact on the dynamics of the conflict. These findings highlight the significant role and potential influence of non-state actors in international conflicts. Non-state actors, particularly those with global reach and popularity, can shape public opinion, influence government policies, and even alter the course of conflicts.
